Cisco Network Security Survival Guide

Cisco Borderless Network Security Explained

By jheary on Sun, 11/22/09 - 9:04pm.

Get the real scoop of what Cisco's new term borderless networks is all about, learn how to use some of the mainstream hacking tools, and understand how you can use what you probably already have to better defend your network. Cisco's techwise TV show just released a new video that I thought was worth mentioning. Here is their description; "The idea was to really narrow down the control points that still remain when your network is no longer identified by a physical entity or easily defined presence if you will. We took advantage of Jimmy Ray’s hacker skills and did our best to to walk in his shoes..what would he do? Where would he go?"

Fellow NW blogger Jimmy Ray Purser, with all his witty humor, is featured in the show. The survival guide video runs through several different options Cisco customers have for defending themselves from Layer 2 attacks, wireless attacks, firewall recon and a few others. First Jimmy gives a demo of the hacking tools and techniques then shows some features you can enable to prevent them.

The best part for seasoned pros would be the concept and marketing idea around Cisco's new borderless networks architectures. Robb Boyd tells it like it is and foregoes the marketing machine. However, this survival guide is really made for the security trainee or those new to the Cisco security features in your existing gear. The tools used are still relevant but a bit basic so you security gurus won't find it new but rather a refresher.

This video also demos the new advancements that Cisco has made in the Wireless IPS market. The new PCI requirements around wireless IPS is covered well and a demo of the WIPS solution is shown.
