IBM has acquired a Cisco-funded company that makes software for securing databases. Guardium is a Waltham, MA.-based firm that was founded in 2002 and raised $21 million in funding from Cisco, several venture companies and others.

Guardium's products provide real-time monitoring of database activity to detect fraud, outside attacks and other illegal activities. The company has about 150 employees and 400 customers.

Guardium's software supports a range of multivendor databases. IBM plans to keep that multivendor support intact and even expand on it.
