Things I Am Thankful For

A 2009 Android Retrospective

By Mark Murphy on Tue, 12/29/09 - 8:15am.

This column tends to wield more than its fair share of brickbats, as I try to cajole various players in the Android ecosystem to work with each other, not at cross-purposes. However, if I hand out coal during the year, it is only fair to try to make amends during this season.

So, for 2009, I am thankful...

...for T-Mobile, Android's earliest and staunchest adopter among US carriers, for flying the flag (and, incidentally, for getting 3G service to my corner of the planet)

...for Verizon, for the big, brash ad campaign that accompanied the DROID, for helping to push Android into the minds of more people

...for Sprint and all the other carriers worldwide who joined the Android party in 2009

...for HTC, the world's most prolific Android device manufacturer, for keeping the parade o' devices marching along

...for Motorola, for not backing down from the “Android or bust” pronouncement and for coming out of the blocks sprinting with the CLIQ/DEXT and DROID/Milestone

...for Samsung, LG, and other device manufacturers, for helping to extend Android's breadth of devices and reach into all sorts of markets

...for Pandora, Facebook, Amazon, MySpace, The Weather Channel, Last.fm, USA Today, Opera, and all the other “name brand” software developers who added Android to their lineup, for helping to bring more recognition to the Android platform

...for the legion of less-renowned app developers, for helping to ensure “there's an app for that here, too”

...for StackOverflow, for making such a valuable support resource that Google has endorsed it for Android developer Q&A

...for NetworkWorld, for dealing with my sometimes erratic schedule for these posts

...for the core Android team, for putting up with me and everyone else kvetching about X, Y, and proverbially Z, and for making all of this possible

...and for you, dear readers, for not falling asleep by the end of this list.

You are awake, right?

Hello??

Regardless, see you in 2010!
