Writes David Strom in his Web Informant newsletter today: "The end is near for corporate voice mail, and its demise is spelled I.M."
It's a provocative assessment, and depending on how one defines "near," likely a premature one. But Strom also has authored an update on the state of workplace instant messaging that is published in today's New York Times. The story is definitely recommended reading along with a companion piece headlined "It's not just for chatting anymore."
The takeaway from these stories is clear: IM's role in business communications has rapidly reached critical mass and is going nowhere but up. (Voice mail's looking a little peaked; might be coming down with something.)
