A Microsoft patch is causing a glitch in Cisco's Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) WAN acceleration appliance. Cisco issued a field notice on the anomaly early this week.
Microsoft published a Windows operating system patch -- KB980232, according to the Cisco field notice -- on April 13 to address some reported vulnerabilities in Server Message Block (SMB) clients. The patch updates the manner in which the SMB clients handle SMB responses and validate fields within the SMB response, according to the Cisco field notice.
As a result, the patch requires a related update to the WAAS Common Internet File System optimization for compatibility because the file save/save-as operation may not be successful when WAAS CIFS optimization is turned on. A pop-up message indicating "There has been a network or file permisson error. The network connection may be lost" is generated by the client, the field notice states.
Cisco said it discovered the glitch through its own internal testing. The company has issued updated WAAS software that it says is compatible with the patch.
