Internet2 taps Georgetown CIO as its chief

Georgetown's Dave Lambert takes Internet2 reins from Doug Van Houweling

Internet2, the advanced networking consortium, has appointed Dave Lambert as its new president and CEO, replacing Douglas Van Houweling.

Lambert is VP for information services and CIO at Georgetown University, where he has led the school's tech efforts for the past 12 years. Before that, he served in key technology roles at Cornell University. Lambert is also a founding member of Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX), a sort of mini Internet2 in the Washington, D.C. area.

 "My involvement in Internet2 from its founding in 1996 has given me a keen appreciation of the critical role Internet2's programs and services play in enabling America's foremost universities' and corporations' use of advanced networking technologies," Lambert said in a statement. "I am excited to have the opportunity to lead Internet2's advanced networking communities into the next decade."

Current President and CEO Douglas Van Houweling, after 12 years of service, had asked the board to start looking for a successor, which they began to do in December. Under his watch, Internet2 cranked its network backbone up to 100G Ethernet, advanced technologies such as multicasting and IPv6, and provided infrastructure to support important networking efforts, such as those involved in health IT.
