Microsoft's summer of 'pimps' and 'action'

By Paul McNamara on Wed, 07/12/06 - 3:23pm.

The grownups must have taken extended vacations this summer and left Microsoft's marketing department in the hands of college interns, given the sophomoric promotional materials rolling out of Redmond.

First, we had the tastelessly hackneyed and hurriedly removed "Hey Windows Live! Come pimp my office!" internal campaign. (We're still awaiting our promised copy of the "creative," and will share as soon as it arrives.)

Now we get this "GET SOME ACTION" card from Microsoft's Partner Program, which is holding its annual conference this week in Boston. About the size of an index card, it reads "GET SOME ACTION" in large white-on-black type, with a tiny "for your business" tucked underneath -- you know, just in case someone got the wrong idea, nudge-nudge, wink-wink, say no more, say no more.

By the way, our man at the Microsoft event who picked up the card, Ryan DeBeasi, is an honest-to-goodness college intern who has seen his share of sophomoric behavior recently, as he'll enter his junior year in the fall. Ryan said he "couldn't believe it" when he saw the double-entendre.

Microsoft could use someone with Ryan's maturity and judgment.
