Feds: FCC bungles E-Rate

By Layer 8 on Wed, 10/19/05 - 10:14am.

Another government agency is coming under criticism today, with this issue centered around technology.

An oversight subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee says the FCC has done a poor job overseeing the E-Rate program, which was implemented to provide discounted Internet access and connection equipment to rural and low-income areas.

The committee says the $2.25 billion program "is extremely vulnerable to waste, fraud, and abuse, is poorly managed by the FCC, and completely lacks tangible measures of either effectiveness or impact." Otherwise, pretty much like every other federal agency.

And, to make it more depressing, remember: "The E-Rate program is financed by charges paid by telephone companies and typically passed along to consumers in the form of a universal service charge on consumers' phone bills."
