AOL's new privacy policy

By Layer 8 on Thu, 11/10/05 - 9:49am.

magnifyingglass.jpgIt's somewhat of a good news/bad news scenario when it comes to AOL's new privacy policy.

The company says it will no longer share subscriber names and addresses with other companies for marketing purposes. However, AOL will track where you go on its site and tailor news, weather and ads based on what you do.

Targeting content - and more important to AOL, ads - to a visitor's movement isn't new. Unfortunately also common is the fact the ISP won't comment or outline on how long it retains the data on you or your movements.

A few weeks ago Google also overhauled its privacy policy and is playing its data retention policy similarly close to the vest.
