Off topic: Why I've always hated Bobby Knight

So the boorish bully has done it again, slapped silly a hapless player, who if there were any justice in the world, would have knocked Coach Knight into next week in response. Someday, one will, and I promise to be leading the applause.

Hate is a word I rarely use in relation to another human being, but man, oh, man, do I hate that man … and everything he stands for in sports, specifically the Bobby Knight-type coach. I played for one on my high school basketball team and the memory causes me rage more than 30 years after having meekly swallowed the last insult. Builds character, you say? Baloney, these Neanderthals build rage -- the kind that lingers in grown men three decades removed from their clutches.

Today, all kinds of crap is being written about the latest Knight outburst; the usual sycophants offering up the usual lame excuses. But I stumbled across one voice of reason -- Jack McCaffery of the Delaware County Times -- that I heartily recommend you read.

Character, my ass.

Why he isn't in an institution is beyond me. Those who defend his actions have no more intelligence or self control than that old fart, Knight.

Knight isn't in an institution because he is an Institution...you should seek help for your own anger management and self control issues...

I am going to land somewhere in between the original article (Knight is a Demon) and the reply (Thank God for Knight) and suggest that Paul and others take an opportunity to go and watch a practice at their local University. You will most likely see something very similar, just not performed by Knight, so less publicity. Knight does get a little exicted sometimes, but he has one of the best Graduation rates and has done more to raise funds for libraries and other causes (kids with cancer and other afflictions). I know that some coaches only care about the wins and will let their athletes give them 4 years of althetic eligibility and won't care if they graduate or not. If you read the quote by the kid in question, he indicates that he thought it was not a significant issue. The expert quoted in the article also suggests that some kids can take it(and possibly even respect it), while others cannot. They know what they are getting into when the come to play for coach Knight. As with most issues, the reality isn't either black or white, but somewhere in the middle.

It's true no one is all good or all bad ...

But the good Knight does in no way excuses his behavior. Plenty of coaches win and graduate their players without abusing them along the way. We're talking basic human civility here -- it's not a terribly high standard -- yet Knight demonstrates time and time again that it is beyond his capacity.

Knight is a jerk. Plain and simple. Even Hitler got the trains to run on time and built the infrastructure of Germany into a World power.... does that excuse his other autrocities? No and that same standard holds true for coaches who develop young athletes. Knight is too arrogant for his own good.

Bob Knight is everything that is wrong with sports

Paul,

You couldn't be more on the mark. I, too, had coaches like this and they just turn you off from sports. Under the guise of "building character" and with the excuse of "winning," they get a forum to showcase all the worst human traits. (Hi, remember me, I'm Woody Hayes!)

What's scarier are the school officials, family and alumnae that condone this behavior because they might be able to post a few more wins for their teams. I'm also looking forward to one of his players hauling off and flattening him one day.

Sounds like you have some anger management issues. The player should have hit Knight? You 'Hate' Knight. It's never too late to take your own advice and seek help...

Yup, I'm a candy-ass, panty-waiste, ticking time-bomb

Gotta love a thread where I'm called a candy-ass, panty-waiste and then chastised for being too violent. The first guy probably has the closer read, but please don't deny me the pleasure of fantasizing about smacking that jackass Knight.
