Researcher demos at RSA how firewalls can be penetrated via DNS

A security researcher Tuesday at the RSA Conference is going to demonstrate how routers from Linksys and other manufacturers can be abused by attackers to penetrate firewalls. According to a story by the IDG News Service, Dan Kaminsky has spent the past year studying how design flaws in the way that browsers work with the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS) can be manipulated in this way.

According to the story:

Cisco partners with EMC to enter the data-leak prevention arena

There are two major conferences opening this week with Cisco making announcements at both of them. The 12th annual Cisco Partner Summit kicks off in Honolulu with services and collaboration being key themes. Check out Cisco Subnet ChannelGuy's blog for more on that. In the less balmy streets of San Francisco Cisco is at the RSA Conference this week announcing a pact with EMC that will enable the network giant to enter the data-leak prevention market.

It begins. RSA 2008

Registration has begun for RSA 2008. Just monitoring my Twitter network it feels like the whole security world is descending on San Francisco today. I have already staked out my customery seat inside the lobby of the "W" across the street from Moscone Center, although two geeks got th the power plugs in the floor before I could.

Stirling adds SIM features to malware protection

Stirling is for sure one of the biggie announcements people are buzzing about for RSA next week. It adds security information functions to the Forefront product, according to information from Microsoft on the project. Stirling will also be integrated with NAC, Microsoft says, so users will be able to set policies and execute them for the clients from the same console used to monitor security. Of course, Microsoft doesn't have the best reputation for its "security," -- meaning all of its wares seem to be the target of much hacking -- but its NAC offerings is a major contender in that emerging area.
