The final keynote at Cisco Live held in Las Vegas this week was an interview of William Shatner conducted by Cisco senior VP and (and conference MC) Carlos Dominguez. Shatner was hilarious. He was also surprisingly sage. Read more
With 15,000 attendees in Las Vegas, and another 40,000 streaming Cisco Live over the Internet, Cisco used the keynote as an opportunity to show off its sense of humor. Here's a video I took this morning of how the company kicked off the keynote.
It worked. People were laughing and jovial during the keynote (even a jaded editor like myself). I ran into Scott Hogg on the show floor and we both agreed that it's good to see an IT industry conference so vibrant again. Read more
As usual at Networkers, my schedule's a little tight to write something thorough about what's come up at the show this week. But even on the first full day of the show Monday, there were a couple of tidbits that came up that I think matter to the Cisco cert world - if not immediately, then sometime down the road. Today I'll give you a few quick hits from what I've heard so far. Read more
I, along with thousands of others, received an interesting e-mail from Cisco this morning warning me that details about me seem to have wound up in the hands of unauthorized people. Cisco Subnet editor, Julie Bort, also received an e-mail tip from a reader about the situation. You know I have many thoughts and opinions to share, but before I get into that, here's the e-mail in full. Read more
I spent the first half of this week at Cisco's invitation-only, almost-always-annual (it wasn't held last year) "C-Scape" analyst meeting, this year co-located with their huge (12,000+ real/8000+ virtual attendees) Cisco Live! customer/partner event. I can only afford to go to two or three of these briefings every year, but Cisco's, for obvious reasons, is always a priority. Read more
For my last blog from Cisco Live this year, I am happy to run our traditional Hottest Booth Girl Contest. As any attendee will admit, extremely good looking young women are a sure-fire way to get male network geeks to listen to your 60 second speech about how your software tool will revolutionize a network.
Our past winner went to Qumu in 2008 for bringing us Gigi. (Sadly, there was no contest in 2009 given my lack of attendance that year). Read more
Carlos Dominguez, SVP, Office of the Chairman and CEO and emcee of the Cisco Live keynotes started off the keynote today with a short slide show on funny signs in Las Vegas.
So, poignant that I saw this in the lunch line today. LMAO!
Five young Mexican students won the second Cisco I-Prize, a global contest to conceptualize an idea that could turn into Cisco's next billion dollar opportunity. The first I-Prize, awarded 18 months ago, went to a German/Russian team that essentially conceived Cisco's entry into the smart grid business. Read more
Cisco announced a business-oriented pad somewhat similar to IPad. While intriguing, it's not the most intriguing new thing I learned today at networkers, so let me write briefly about LISP. I will be brief today. Tuesday at the show is always busy. The big party for all attendees is Wednesday night, and monday night is free beer and food on the show floor, so all the folks doing smaller get togethers try to schedule Tuesday night. Read more
I stopped by the Cisco Live World of Solutions Certification Lounge last night and was handed a "gift" at the door.
What are these things? :-)
I think they made a movie about these metal balls. Read more
I hope to leave a few posts this week from the Cisco Live aka Networkers show. It's still early in the show, so no big announcements yet, and no answers yet on the questions wer're collecting with the previous post. But I've seen a few things of some interest, some networking, some not, so I'll start this week's posts with a random thoughts kind of post. Read more
WLAN was not on this morning when we started, but the SSID showed up shortly afterwards (maybe it was the room I'm in). Performance has been pretty decent.

This is a big place, going to be lots of walking this week.
I'm in my day-long Techtorial:
Bowling shirts...check, obscure reference T-shirts...check, all 16 episodes of Firefly on Blue Ray...check!
All right who is heading out to Cisco Live this year in Vegas? This is Cisco's premier geek event for folks like us. Great training, cool announcements and normally some good music in the evening. Robb and I are packing up our stuff (separately...but we do share the same calf-high sports striped tube socks) and making tracks west. Read more
Cisco Live 2010, aka Networkers, starts the week of June 28th in Vegas. As usual, whenever I go to this or any other trade show event, there's usually a short list of questions that I've been pondering. So, when walking around the show floor, I seek out those who might have an answer to a question. Read more
I received the e-mail below as a Cisco Partner, but I am wondering if Cisco will learn from its press mistakes from last year? You all remember when this was an invitation only event and the press did not get invited even if they were paying their own way to cover the event. Read more
Although I wasn't able to attend in person the North American Network Operators' Group (NANOG46) meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 14 to June 17, 2009, I did review the presentations from the conference. I was astounded by the number of IPv6-related presentations at this NANOG meeting and the IPv6 presentations at Cisco Live. There were some exciting announcements made at these meetings regarding IPv6 deployments that I wanted to call your attention to. Read more
This past week I was fortunate enough to attend Cisco Live 2009 in San Francisco California. I wanted to share with you my experiences this week in case you weren't able to be there. If you have never been to a Cisco Live event I highly recommend that you make your plans to attend the 2010 event in Las Vegas. Read more
