from our Gearhead: Android G1 phone outclasses Apple iPhone

T-Mobile has a hit in its new Android-based G1 smartphone, says our Gearhead blogger, Mark Gibbs. In fact, the G1 has proven so strong, he's decided to stick with T-Mobile and surrender his former iPhone yearning.

Gibbs has an assessment of the G1 today on his blog. The G1 is the first commercial implementation of the Linux-based Android mobile phone operating system, from the Open Handset Alliance.

$776 is rather expensive

When the first iPhone was introduced, the price was considered a rip-off by many buyers. Coupled with a poor economy, this HTC isn't going to be flying off shelves at that price. Are buyers really going to spend twice as much money in order to get a bit more screen area, a better camera and get a chance to run Windows Mobile? I'm sure a few will, but there really is so much competition from the G1 and new Nokias that I don't think it's going to sell in huge quantities.

Apple sued over iPhone's Safari Web browser

Just weeks after being issued a web navigation patent, a Texas company is using it to sue Apple, charging that the mobile Safari browser on the iPhone infringes the patent.

The suit was filed today by EMG Technology LLC. In the court document, the company's offices are listed as being in Tyler Texas, but its principle place of business in Los Angeles, Calif.

Why not port Android to netbooks?

That's the question ZDnet's Jason Perlow asks. Netbooks, just like the Android-based G1 (and Apple's iPhone OS), are aimed squarely at the consumer, and in most cases, the non-techie consumer. And if Apple and Google can get all that functionality into a phone footprint, just think what they could offer when they have the processor, memory and screen real estate of a netbook.

Upgrade Woes for iPhones... Again

Apple and business users. Are we there yet? Is Apple really ready for the enterprise? Nagging doubts won’t go away as long as Apple struggles with reliably delivering software, upgrades and enterprise features.

Storm Rumbles Across iPhone Plains

Well, the Blackberry Storm is finally here. I've had a chance to use both and here's my honest assessment of the Blackberry Storm compared with the iPhone. I know, you're probably wondering how I know what an iPhone is like after all the ranting I've done about Apple and it's black box iPhone and socialistic company behaviors towards end users. Well, I actually have both a Blackberry Storm and an iPhone.

Our BlackBerry Storm review is online

Our Cool Tools Editor, Keith Shaw isn't going to surrender his Apple iPhone 3G, but he says the brand new Blackberry Storm, on sale now, has a lot to recommend it.

You can read his review of Research in Motion's newest device and offer your own impressions, including your continued hosannas or flames for the iPhone.

BlackBerry Storm: iPhone's worthy foe

OK, so do we finally have an iPhone killer, now that the BlackBerry Storm from Verizon Wireless is out?

Killer? No. Worthy opponent? Yes.

In the less-than-24-hours that I've had the device and have been able to do a basic set of tests on the BlackBerry Storm (on sale Friday, Nov. 21, for $199.99 after $50 mail-in rebate and two-year agreement), I can say that people who abhor the Apple iPhone will be able to grab a Storm and go, "Nyah Nyah Nyah" to their fellow iPhone owners. But I don't expect that large mobs of iPhone owners will suddenly switch gears to the Storm, either (they can't, they still have their own two-year contracts). But the Apple Haters now have a horse in the race – the Storm does an admirable job of matching several of the iPhone's features and provides some features that the iPhone doesn't have.

iPhone in Taiwan in 2008 and soon thereafter in People's Republic of China

Nice report Dan ...

While many in Taiwan already have an iPhone, the official launch may allow for a modest carrier (Chunghwa) subsidy and the price will certainly drop vs. the gray-market USD $900.

You are one of the very few to report on this story and not bury the lead ... Taiwan deal suggests iPhone in PRC soon!

Google offers speak-and-search for the iPhone

One major feature the Google/T-Mobile G1 has over Apple's iPhone is it's swivel-out keyboard. The iPhone touchscreen keyboard is not all that intuitive and typing out simple texts and e-mails takes some time and patience. But Google refuses to let such a small thing stand in the way of getting all those deep-pocketed iPhone users onto its mobile search engine.

Blackberry Storm - Better Late Than Buggy

Looks like plans to get the new Blackberry Storm next week have been dashed until the end of the month. GIZMODO is reporting there's a software glitch and Verizon's holding off until it's fixed. Fine by me.

Apple could cut iPhone's Price in Half, Says Report

Needham Research analyst Charlie Wolf says Apple has room to cut the iPhone price in half and still make a tidy 42.3 percent profit margin. That means iPhones could be the same price as the $100 Blackberry Curve and Pearl SmartPhones. If Apple did that, it would make the introduction of the much desired (by me) BlackBerry Storm a moot point. It would be a way for Apple to sell ungodly amounts of iPhones, not that last quarter's iPhone numbers weren't insane already.

Google offers Earth for the iPhone

Google unveiled a version of its Google Earth 3-D mapping tool tailored for Apple's iPhone, and early reviewers like Mashable's Stan Schroeder are impressed. The version puts the iPhone's unique touch interface to good use, letting users easily navigate within the application and even tilt the phone to change views.

AT&T Service Stinks

I love my iPhone. I love the features and ease of use. I love having music and videos. I hate the coverage and service. I have a separate Verizon wireless card for my PC which is infinitely better! On a trip thru South Dakota the Verizon card was mostly on-line while AT&T was showing No Service. Even in my normal base of operations in Colorado, Verizon was much better. AT&T can only skate for so long and once the iPhone love affair wears off, they'll finally have to set up and improve their coverage. Or not. Most of these wireless monopolies only care about the contract and not the customer.

Android's openness attracts Microsoft

If you build it, they will come. At least that's the idea behind Google's open mobile OS Android. Because it's an open platform, open to any developer to build on, Android applications promise to be far more numerous and varied than those available for the closed Apple iPhone. Just ask Microsoft.

Texas university embraces the iPhone

Abilene Christian University this fall put Apple iPhones and iPod Touches into the hands of about 1,000 freshman as part of a huge new mobile learning project.

Pretty cool to see a school that is embracing the mobile technology rather than treating it as a distraction.

Also, the school is being forward thinking by creating apps that work on the Apple devices, but could also be used on Android or other devices down the road.
