Yahoo investor urgest Microsoft to Yahoo

Yahoo investor Mithras Capital LP has proposed that Yahoo sell itself to Microsoft for $22/share. While that price is far lower than the $33/share Microsoft had at one time offered for Yahoo, it does represent a premium over the $12.66/share that was Yahoo's price as of close of trading Thursday. Microsoft has said it is no longer interested in Yahoo but investors continue to hold out hope that Microsoft will change its mind.

Finally some good numbers for Microsoft LiveSearch

Microsoft turned out to the bright star in the Web search marketing game in the third quarter compared to arch rivals Google and Yahoo, according to Web researcher AdGooroo. In its latest quarterly report, AdGooroo said Microsoft LiveSearch has grown its active advertiser base by almost 32% in one year.

Google, Yahoo agree to delay ad deal

Although Google CEO Eric Schmidt declared this summer that his company's ad-sharing deal with Yahoo would go full speed ahead as scheduled this month, despite an ongoing investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice, it looks like he's thought better of that course of action.

Yahoo/Google deal proponents get nervous

With the ad sharing deal between Google and Yahoo expected to go into effect as early as this week, several pro-dealers are suddenly, at the last minute, taking the opportunity to sing its praises. We all know where Google stands, since it published a "fact" list not too long ago aimed at calming fears about the deal. Now Yahoo is doing its part, devoting an entire site to presenting its case for the deal. And not to be outdone, several California members (Google and Yahoo's home state) of the U.S. House of Representatives have sent letters to the Department of Justice warning regulators not to block the deal. Do they know something we don't?

While it's about time that Yahoo came out and added its voice to Google's, its new detailed pro-deal site is a bit dramatic. The company's "Yahoo-Google Search Agreement" site presents a detailed argument for the deal, and includes areas like "Benefits of the Agreement," "Benefits to Advertisers" and links to several other pro-deal sources. It also includes actual testimony from Yahoo, as well as a letter from Yahoo VP of Global Public Policy David Hantman to Ohio Rep. Steve Chabot, rebutting Chabot's contention that the deal would result in Google controlling 90% of the search market. It says:

Google presents facts about Yahoo deal

Now that Google's ad-sharing deal with Yahoo! is being scrutinized, not only by the U.S. Department of Justice, but also the European Union, Google is attempting to set the record straight. Tim Armstrong, Google North American President of Advertising and Commerce, has published a list of "facts" about the deal that present Google's case for why the pact will not result in a monopoly or less competition in the online advertising marketplace. While the blog presents Google's view of the deal clearly and concisely, some of its facts are a bit "google-eyed."

For example, the first question says: "Is this agreement bad for competition?" And Google answers with a firm: "Just the opposite." While Google can say it believes that the ad deal will only serve to make Yahoo! a stronger competitor in the online advertising market, that can't be Google's true aim. Google is, after all, just like any business. It's goal is to out-compete its competitors, not give them a hand in beating itself. The end of the answer is especially telling:

"In addition, the agreement is non-exclusive, meaning Yahoo! could make a similar deal with another company."

What other companies could Yahoo! pursue? Microsoft? That seems unlikely at best. Google is far and away the king of online search, and while Yahoo! may be open to partnering with another firm, finding one on par with Google just isn't possible.

The blog sums up Google's argument like this:

EU investigating Google/Yahoo deal too

Why should U.S. regulators have all the fun? The European Union (EU) confirmed that it too is investigating the upcoming Google/Yahoo ad deal to discern if it stifles competition in the European Economic Area, according to this guardian.co.uk story. While Google claims the EU has no cause for concern, especially since the deal covers only Yahoo sites in the U.S. and Canada, the EU move can't be good news for Google. As others in the past (Microsoft) have found, EU regulatory scrutiny is plain bad for business.

Google/Yahoo antitrust suit edges closer

Move over Microsoft. Google may be about to take over as the latest tech company in the government's antitrust crosshairs. According to this report in the Wall St. Journal, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has hired prominent antitrust lawyer Sandy Litvack to help it review Yahoo's agreement to outsource its search advertising to Google. The move could be a signal that the DOJ is readying an antitrust suit to block the deal.

Google-Yahoo deal to start in October

Optimism is the watchword at Google when it comes to its upcoming ad-sharing deal with Yahoo. In an interview on Bloomberg TV, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said Google plans to go ahead with the deal in October. By then, the 3.5 months Google agreed to wait for the Justice Department to scrutinize the pact will have passed.

"We are going to move forward," Schmidt said. "We are in the process of talking to the government. They've not indicated one way or the other how they're dealing with us."

The 1-petabyte barrier is crumbling

I'd been a database industry analyst for a decade before I found 1-gigabyte databases to write about. Now it's 15 years later, and the 1-petabyte barrier is crumbling. Specifically, we're about to see production data warehouses -- running on commercial database management systems -- that contain over 1 petabyte of actual user data. Greenplum is slated to have two of them within 60 days. Given how close it was a year ago, Teradata may have crossed the 1-petabyte mark by now too.

A good Google search supremacy theory

Hey, Dell, get off of my cloud!

Rejected! Dell gets denied at the cloud-computing goal line by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. No "cloud computing" trademark for Dell. Dell trying to trademark "cloud computing" would be like Microsoft trying to trademark "desktop computing." Too many companies use the term cloud computing to describe online services for Dell or anyone else to attempt to swoop in and trademark the term right from under the market. It would create turmoil for what is already a generalized and widely used term. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Yahoo, IBM, HP and others all offer what they term cloud computing or cloud services.
Why would Dell lay claim to the term cloud computing?

Survey: Google tops in customer satisfaction

Google is far and away the most satisfying search experience on the Web, according to the University of Michigan's annual American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). While it had dropped below Yahoo on the index last year, this year's survey shows Google surging ahead of all comers, garnering an unprecedented 86 on a scale of 100 for customer satisfaction.

In the survey, the e-business category also saw huge gains, with satisfaction across the board increasing by 6% to an all-time high of 79.3. Still, Google's rating was surprising. As the study authors say:

Google, Yahoo reveal ad pact--in part

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Google and Yahoo exposed parts of their recent deal that would allow Google to sell ads alongside Yahoo search results, Reuters reports. But what's interesting is what they didn't reveal.

The deal, which will go into effect once/if it passes regulatory muster, aims to let Yahoo focus on other aspects of its business while Google does the ad-sales heavy lifting. Currently, Google handles 70% of the online ad search market.

Cloud computing chums

From the IDG News Service:

Hewlett-Packard, Intel and Yahoo are partnering for cloud computing research and education in order to advance the development and adoption of large-scale, data-intensive Internet-hosted applications and related IT infrastructure.

By banding together, the trio of computer industry titans hopes to foster collaboration among vendors, universities and government agencies around cloud computing, whose progress is hampered by "financial and logistical barriers," the companies said Tuesday.

READ THE REST HERE

HP, Intel, Yahoo team up on cloud computing

Like Google and IBM before them, HP, Intel and Yahoo are joining forces to kick-start cloud-computing research. But unlike IBM/Google, the interesting thing about the new group is that it's decidedly international in flavor, says Google Watch's Clint Boulton.

Google's stranglehold on search loosens a bit

Although Google claims it has something of a Wal-Mart effect, in that as the economy tightens, users look to spend more wisely and so increase their use of search, the effect seems to have spread to its competitors, Yahoo and Microsoft.

According to monthly numbers published by comScore, Google's share of the Web search market in June went down 0.3% to 61.5%, while Yahoo gained 0.3% to hold a 20.9% share, and Microsoft jumped 0.7%, for a 9.2% share.

Google to meet antitrust queries with straight face

To pull off Google's strategy for calming antitrust fears from its ad search deal with Yahoo, Google legal eagle David Drummond will need to present his case without cracking a smile, a difficult feat at best. According to Google's press release offered ahead of today's hearings before the Senate and House Judiciary Committees, Google's response contains the following hard-to-swallow facts, among others:

Yahoo looks to thwart Google with openness

Yahoo decided to open up its search platform to competitors in an effort to level the search playing field--and launch a hit at Google. The new Yahoo!
Microsoft and Google say they want privacy regulation for Internet advertisers

The official story is that Microsoft and Google both genuflected to government regulators today testifying that they want laws to protect the privacy of Web users from Internet advertisers. Yes, taken on face value, this means that Microsoft is asking for government regulation in its hot up-and-coming online ad business. The unofficial story, according to some blog posts, is what they really want is for the government to regulate the other guys.
