I received this email from Cisco today offering a free retake on exams if you don’t pass. Seems they are hurting from the bad economy and need to generate business. My questions to our readers are is in the last year how many Cisco exams have you taken and have many times did you need to retake a test? Do you think that tests are too expensive and the prices should be reduced? How about $125 for a CCNP and that would include all tests? What would Cisco do if everyone just stopped taking the test? Would that get us out of this certification problem we seem to have and bring real world experience back into play more?

Check out the latest Brad Reese on Cisco blog post where he discusses an intriguing program offered by Tech Pros Group which is advertising paid internships for Cisco and Microsoft LAN/WAN engineers. Brad writes: "In my opinion it appears too good to be true, and an immediate red flag was raised in my viewpoint upon discovery that a $95 application fee is required to apply."

Depending on how you read this blog title, you might take it one of two ways. One interpretation is simply the objective voice asking, "What's the compelling driver behind the pursuit of a CCDE?" The other is the darker and more confrontational voice, challenging you: "Why on earth would you go after this certification?" Over the past year, since I became aware of the CCDE and participated in the beta process I've had a lot of time to reflect on this cert. And because I've asked myself the question "Who needs the CCDE?" in both ways, in this post I'll look at the question from both sides.

Horrible economy, companies trying to save money and Cisco adds three new certifications (head shake and mumbling to myself)Well since I did not make the trip to Orlando since I had customer to help, a friend called me to give me the updates on the new certifications. Also Wendell did a nice write up on it also which I linked to at the bottom. I will ask him to post his thoughts on my story. But here we go; now we all know what my last story was about, I am sure no one at Cisco read it. Now they decide to add three more certifications.

Cisco skills/jobs shortage? Bah!

Interesting discussion in this recent chat with Cisco Subnet blogger Brad Reese. Reese explains again why he thinks Cisco is not on the up-and-up over its so-called job and skills shortage. If the IT industry is convinced that the world is hard-up for more Cisco professionals it can recruit for its certifications programs like mad.

Even more importantly, Reese says that the best way to boost your career is to focus on (and only on) the technology that excites you and let the money find you. It will, he say, it will.

CCNA Lab, Part 6: CCNA Router Labs on a Slightly-less Constrained Budget

Today, I'm going to wrap up the bigger picture of the three options for a CCNA lab. You might recall from early last week, I blogged about the first of 3 options for your CCNA lab, at least the router part:
1) Cheap, CCNA-only: 2 older model routers, plus cables
2) Tight budget, 3 router, some upgrade path
3) Good prep for CCNP next, without going overboard

Today, I'll get to the details on the other two options.

First, my suggested topology for options 2 and 3 are the same - three routers, with a need for 2 serial and 1 LAN interface per router. The following figure shows the basics, and how I'd probably leave it cabled most of the time - ignoring the switches for the time being.

How far does Cisco's digital ID policy reach to stamp out exam cheating?

Before taking any Cisco exam you must now provide a digital signature and a digital photograph. The new policy, which Cisco says will be rolled out worldwide next year is designed to help combat exam cheating and to preserve the integrity of certifications, say Cisco officials. The company reckons that exam cheating in the Cisco world is an 'isolated problem' but CertGuard, which works with different vendors to stamp out exam cheating says the problem is more widespread for Cisco - even more than for Microsoft. CertGuard says it has even spoken to so-called gunmen - who are paid to take tests for others - who claim to own some testing centers.

CCENT: Making the 1 minute per question goal

So far, the results from the survey I put in Monday’s blog shows that about half of those taking the time to answer would be more inclined to take the ICND1 exam, and therefore get a CCENT cert, than before the announcement of CCENT. That pretty well matches what I’ve been hearing from people the last few months – it’s more tempting to take the 2-exam path today, but it’s not necessarily hugely compelling. But even with the ICND1 exam, time pressure plays a role. So, continuing on this week’s theme of looking at CCENT and its content, today I want to show a example of a type of question you might see on the CCENT exam, and give you a chance to test yourself, and to time yourself, to see how long the question takes.

Cisco updates CCDP exam

Cisco has rewritten 90% of the course for its Cisco Certified Design Professional certification and a new exam for it will be available at Pearson VUE testing centers Oct. 11. The revised courses will be available from Cisco Learning Partners in the first week of August.

The new course – Designing Cisco Network Service Architectures, ARCH v. 2.0 - puts increased emphasis on Cisco’s Service-Oriented Network Architecture (SONA), which aims to encompass all of Cisco's enterprise technologies, including wired network infrastructure, voice, applications, security and mobility.

Cisco introduces basic level networking certification, networking pros question its worth

Cisco added a new entry level certification to its training program. The Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) can be considered a half-way point to the current entry-level program, the Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA), which has been moved up the stack. (Watch a short video by CCNA trainer and Cisco Press author Wendell Odom, who discusses the new CCNA exams.)

A five-day training course to prepare students for the exam has been available from Cisco learning partners since July 26, and students will be able to take the exam starting Aug. 1.
