Slow Decline

It's too bad that Dell will likely kill the innovative R&D and development that makes the EqualLogic product unique. The company has never successfully acquired a company (reminder: Alienware is an arms-length acquisition that Dell left alone). We've already seen the best and brightest at EqualLogic leave the company and everyone knows Dell can't retain any good talent (especially in the storage industry). So for a longer term investment, I would actually look to NetApp as I know they will have consistent product families and upgrades in the future.

FCoE

First, I would like to thank Douglas Gourlay for responding to my post at http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/24657/177203#comment-177203. You can find his home page at Cisco http://blogs.cisco.com/datacenter/ in his role as Senior Director of Marketing and Product Development for Cisco Data Centre.

All that Fibrechannel and FCOE adds to a data centre is more complexity, and more organisational pain. 'Operational Orchestration' does not occur. Fibrechannel enables the Server and Networking teams to balkanize and does not create synergy. Worse, it creates an opportunity to have a dialog about my FC is better than your IP.

RE: iSCSI breezes into SMB businesses

With the announcement of Dell's intent to purchase EqualLogic, iSCSI is at the forefront of storage news conversation. The Dell/EqualLogic acquisition further validates the iSCSI SAN market, to be sure, but it was already picking up steam and there are already thousands of IT organizations - both large and small - that rely on iSCSI as a core element of their storage infrastructure. Many of these organizations have chosen a different approach to implementing iSCSI, which I would like to explore a bit below.

RE: Vendor unveils iSCSI storage for SMBs

Any update on Equallogic's solution? Looking at your highlighted vendors (Dell and HP) they do both FC and ISCSI. I think Equallogic is ISCSI only vendor.

Securing Block Storage for the Long Haul

I love talking about security. I get to put on my black trench coat and my black fedora, and then soon after I open my mouth a piano falls on my head.

Mark from the Security Consortium took time to write me over the weekend:

Hi Bill,

With the multitude of threats facing IP based protocols and what seem to be multiple protocol solutions in the SAN space, how much impact do you think RFC 3723 is going to have on SAN security in the short term and in the long term?

-m

Hi Mark,

Bing!

I’m home for a few days, my brackets are done, and before I jump right back into PowerPoint Hell, I want to answer a couple of questions that came in while I was out.

Ned Ryerson from Punxsutawney, PA writes: “Do you believe that 10G-bit Ethernet (and iSCSI) will replace Fibre Channel as the basis for storage infrastructures? Bing!”
