It's no secret that Google is holding a press conference Thursday morning in which the company promises a progress report on Chrome OS and to disclose 2010 launch details. Less clear is if we will actually get a beta of the new operating system or if the news will entail only a demo. Updated 073109: AHA! Acer has changed its mind again and has decided to proceed with the Android netbook. IDG News Service reports, "The company decided to reiterate its commitment to the project after news reports said the project had been delayed or changed. The world's third-largest PC vendor plans to debut Android in an Aspire One with a 10-inch screen and an Intel Atom microprocessor. A similar Aspire One is currently available from Acer but it comes with Microsoft Windows XP." Read more

The Android netbook market is changing faster than gossip in a small town, with Chinese manufacturers leading the way. Acer has thrown down the gauntlet and is the first to announce plans to ship a product -- aiming to have it to market this year, no less. Read more
Two more netbooks running a version of Android have materialized in "unannounced" preview machines. One of the Android-based laptops was an unannounced version of Asustek Computer's Eee PC, while the other was a prototype by contract hardware maker Compal Electronics. These two join Dell. Microsoft must be none-too-happy about this. Dell released a video this week of the Dell Mini 10v Netbook running the Cupcake update of Android. While there has been much talk of Android-powered netbooks, this is the first hint of one by a major manufacturer.
