Four things we expect from Google Chrome OS on Thursday, and one we don't

Google will offer a progress report on Chrome OS Thursday morning, but will the OS be released? Not likely

It's no secret that Google is holding a press conference Thursday morning in which the company promises a progress report on Chrome OS and to disclose 2010 launch details. Less clear is if we will actually get a beta of the new operating system or if the news will entail only a demo. Keep in mind that no one outside of Google has seen Chrome OS, and leaked screen shots of the OS in August appear to have been faked.

Acer (doesn't) kill Android netbook afterall

Google Chrome OS (almost) claimed its first casulty, the netbook everyone was watching.

Updated 073109: AHA! Acer has changed its mind again and has decided to proceed with the Android netbook. IDG News Service reports, "The company decided to reiterate its commitment to the project after news reports said the project had been delayed or changed. The world's third-largest PC vendor plans to debut Android in an Aspire One with a 10-inch screen and an Intel Atom microprocessor. A similar Aspire One is currently available from Acer but it comes with Microsoft Windows XP."

Acer announces the first Android netbook (others follow while Asus backpeddles)

The Android netbook market is changing faster than gossip in a small town, with Chinese manufacturers leading the way. Acer has thrown down the gauntlet and is the first to announce plans to ship a product -- aiming to have it to market this year, no less.

PC makers show off two more netbooks running Android

Two more netbooks running a version of Android have materialized in "unannounced" preview machines. One of the Android-based laptops was an unannounced version of Asustek Computer's Eee PC, while the other was a prototype by contract hardware maker Compal Electronics. These two join Dell. About two weeks ago, Dell showed off a prototype version of its Mini 10v using Android Cupcake.

Dell shows off Android Cupcake Netbook

Microsoft must be none-too-happy about this. Dell released a video this week of the Dell Mini 10v Netbook running the Cupcake update of Android. While there has been much talk of Android-powered netbooks, this is the first hint of one by a major manufacturer. This is not a product announcement, insists Doug Anson, a technology strategist from Dell's office of the CTO.
