Skype Exploits: I know where you are, what you are sharing, and how to best stalk you

Security researchers discovered several serious security and privacy flaws in Skype that even a 'high school-age hacker' could use to track not only users’ locations over time but also their P2P file-sharing activity. The security team warned that this information could easily be used for "stalking, blackmail or fraud."
Submitted by Ms. Smith on Thu, 10/20/11 - 10:46am.

While lurking at Wilders Security Forum, I ran across a link to a research paper filled with terrible news for the half-billion registered Skype users. Security researchers have uncovered some really serious security and privacy flaws in Skype that could reveal the identities, locations over time, digital files, and even P2P activity of hundreds of millions of Skype users. In fact it's bad news for users of any Internet-based phone systems or P2P file sharing services.

With Skype, Microsoft gains about 50 communications patents

Microsoft has promised that Skype support for Linux, Android won't stop, but Skype could give it more ammo in its patent licensing war.
Submitted by Microsoft Subnet on Fri, 10/14/11 - 7:09pm.

So Microsoft has officially spent $8.5 billion on Skype and announced that the deal closed today. This is another "Hotmail" type acquisition in that it didn't seem to need the technology. All it gained was users. Or did it? With Skype, Microsoft added about 50 patents covering networking, speech recognition, user interface, too. Hmm.

Default behaviour change in voice gateways
Submitted by Avner Izhar on Thu, 09/08/11 - 10:57pm.

One of the first things to make sure when an H.323 gateway will not work with Cisco Unified Communication Manager (CUCM) is the IP address configuration. This is a common mistake where engineers would configure the gateway in CUCM using its voice interface IP address and would have no problem calling out from IP phones to the PSTN, but would fail on the inbound calls. The reason is that the gateway was using a different IP address (than the one configured on the voice vlan) to contact CUCM and CUCM would reject the call setup packet.

Google's VP8 Getting Help From An Unlikely Source

While MGEG LA creates a patent pool against it, Google gets a hand from Skype/Microsoft
Submitted by Alan Shimel on Tue, 08/09/11 - 12:07pm.

Google received support this week for its embattled WebM video format from an unlikely source. Skype announced that it has adopted VP8 the codec in WebM as its default solution for video conferencing for both one on one and group video calls.  Of course with Skype now serving their corporate overlords in Redmond, this means that Microsoft is at least tacitly endorsing and supporting the format. I guess video codecs make for strange bedfellows.

How is the Cisco 76% off Nexus sale going over with customers? Not well.

Purdue yet to answer how the Nexus won when it did not fill the rfp requirements.
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Mon, 08/08/11 - 11:21am.

Over the last week I have received many emails about a story on the net. The story is all about Cisco giving Purdue University a 76% discount on the Nexus Product line. How they got to that number was a combination of Cisco math (discount, trade in on obsolete Cisco Switches) of which every customer by now is used to. The comments vary a great deal, I have listed them below and removed names.

"What does this say about Cisco list pricing if they give 76% off to a customer"

Grandson Of Browser Wars: Open Source Is Not Enough

The latest sequel of browser wars has Firefox between a rock and a hard place
Submitted by Alan Shimel on Wed, 07/20/11 - 5:42am.

It seems for as long as there has been an Internet, there has been a browser war. Lynx, Mosaic, Netscape Navigator are names that conjure up browsing the web in a simpler time. I still remember well Microsoft coming out with IE and knocking the high flying Netscape off its perch. Many of us were thrilled when Mozilla Firefox rose from the ashes of AOL owned Netscape and became a hipper, cooler way of browsing.
