Microsoft's Virtual Machine Manager R2 to be available by Dec. 21

Microsoft's virtualization team promises delivery 'within 60' of WS2008 R2 RTM
Submitted by Microsoft Subnet on Wed, 06/24/09 - 7:23pm.

Yesterday, we asked Microsoft when Systems Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 would ship. (We asked via Microsoft's experimental Twitter hashtag, #qs4ms.) Due to the power of Twitter, the virtualization team answered: "SCVMM 2008 r2 beta is available, and final will be released within 60 after Windows Server 2008 R2 rtm."

The hypervisor as commodity, the management tools as big expenses

Submitted by Microsoft Subnet on Tue, 07/15/08 - 4:13pm.

Microsoft quietly announced a new timeline and pricing for the Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2008, the tool intended to manage Hyper-V, Network World reports. The company posted this information in its System Center management blog last week. VMM 2008 is scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter although anyone who follows Microsoft knows that ship-date promises posted in a blog isn't the same as a commitment written in stone. The last time Microsoft discussed VMM 2008, it was talking as if the product would be out by the third quarter, no later than Sept. 1, the article says.

5 Things You Need To Know About Hyper-V

Submitted by Mitchell Ashley on Thu, 07/03/08 - 12:23am.

I was fortunate to receive a Twitter message from the Microsoft virtualization team after writing my blog post A Weekend With Hyper-V. If you aren't familiar with the Windows Virtualization Team Blog, you can find it at http://blogs.technet.com/virtualization.

A Weekend With Hyper-V

Submitted by Mitchell Ashley on Mon, 06/30/08 - 1:12pm.

This weekend I spent a good bit of time working with Microsoft's Hyper-V in the Converging Network Labs, following my daughter's baby shower on Saturday (which went swimmingly well thanks to all hard work my wife put into the event.) I installed the release version of Hyper-V on an Intel Q6600 Quad/8GB memory system running of course the Windows Server 2008 64-bit operating system. This is the full Windows Server install, with the Windows management interface, rather than the slimmed down Windows Server 2008 CORE version. I have to say my overall impressions are good, but mixed in some respects given what Hyper-V is all by itself. I'll say a bit more in just a bit.

The Dynamic Datacenter

Submitted by Kerrie Meyler on Tue, 04/29/08 - 4:57pm.

Today at the 2008 Microsoft Management Summit (MMS), Bob Muglia's keynote focused on what Microsoft is calling the "Dynamic Datacenter." What does Microsoft mean by dynamic?

Microsoft has an infrastructure model, also known as the IO model, which can be considered a framework for aligning IT with business needs. The 4th stage of this model is "dynamic," where IT becomes a strategic asset to the organization. The IO model is discussed at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/infrastructure.

A dynamic data center will generally be heterogeneous. Will Microsoft, through System Center, be managing other operating systems? Yes folks, to quote Bob, "it's not your grandfather's Microsoft" (although I don't think Microsoft is as old as my grandfather).

Dynamic datacenters have to be adaptive, which includes the capability to crank out new servers, or apps on any platform, as needed. In a word, we're talking Virtualization, and Bob's talk focuses on new initiatives by Microsoft and System Center in the areas of virtualization and going cross-platform.

Announced today was the beta release of System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2008, which will be able to manage VMWare and ESX, in addition to Microsoft's Virtual Server and Hyper-V (to come out out later this year as an add-on to Windows Server 2008) products. With SCVMM 2008, Microsoft wants to be the single management console for server virtualization, providing a seamless management experience, while exposing each product's unique capabilities.

Bob's second announcement was the Cross Platform Extensions to Operations Manager 2007. What these two announcements mean is that Microsoft, with System Center, is expanding the breadth of its management capabilities to not just manage Microsoft products but Linux, Solaris, AIX, etc.
