System administrator steals almost 20,000 pieces of computer gear

Now this is some serious computer theft. We're talking 19,709 pieces of stolen computer equipment from the US Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. The theft included everything from PCs and printer toner to hard drives, software and other office equipment amounting to over $120,000 according to court documents and published reports.

The systems administrator, Victor Papagno plead guilty in federal court today to stealing the items in a period between 1997 and 2007 to benefit Papagno and his friends, reports said.

He took so much stuff that he stored some of it in neighbors' houses, according to WTOP.com a local news outlet. That report indicated that no secret technological information had been taken but that private information from 14 employees and contractors who worked at the laboratory from 1998 to 2002 had been found on CDs or zip drives, and those people were contacted, the agency said.

Sentencing is set for December when Papagno could face up to two years in jail for the thefts.

The US Naval Research Laboratory calls itself the Navy's corporate laboratory and conducts all manner of scientific research.

Layer 8 in a box

Check out these other hot stories:

Ex-Microsoft exec signs up for second trip to outer space

Software keeps things dropped from the sky from landing on your head

The world's 23 toughest math questions

US Navy shoots down failing satellite on first try

The Pentagon said tonight it had successfully shot down a dying spy satellite, according to broadcast reports.

Rather than risk the chance a large piece of or the fuel from a failing spy satellite falling on populated areas the government last week decided the best course of action was to shoot the satellite down. The physics of such a shot were complicated as the satellite was traveling at about 17,000mph at about 114 miles up and the missile moves at about 5,000mph for a closing rate of over 20,000mph. The Navy had a less than 10 second window to hit the satellite as it passed overhead of its ships in the Pacific Ocean.

President exempts US Navy from environmental restrictions in Calif. training zone

In a highly controversial case, the US Navy played its trump card today as the President issued an order exempting the service from environmental laws and granted it permission to use sonar in training operations off the coast of California. At issue was the need to protect whales and dolphins from mid-frequency active sonar that could harm them, experts said.

Lightning in a gun: U.S. Navy funds powerful laser weapon

First we had the cloaking device now apparently the military is going to get a real live phaser gun.

The company that makes what it calls "directed energy weapons, " Ionatron, today announced it had won an almost $10 million contract from the U.S. Navy to continue developing of its Laser Induced Plasma Channel (LIPC) technology.
