Cisco aims to combat cheating by imprinting photos on tester's score reports

Once described by Cisco as an "isolated problem" the network giant has made its biggest move yet to stamp out exam cheating. Beginning Aug. 1, candidates will receive preliminary score reports imprinted with their photos and unique authentication codes, among other measures.

Cisco drops plans to beta CCDE practical exam

Cisco has scrapped plans to pilot its long-awaited Cisco Certified Design Expert practical exam at Networkers in June and will instead jump straight into offering the practical lab test to the public, untested, later this year, reports Cisco Subnet blogger Michael Morris. Michael had been originally invited to take part in the June beta. Michael writes: "I spoke with a CCDE team member and he indicated they are still on track to deliver the practical exam in the fall.

Cisco speaks out against exam cheating

Cisco has never been one to speak publicly at length about the big cheating industry that revolves around its certifications (it is the second most braindumped certification vendor on certification integrity company Certguard's list), with officials suggesting in December that it was an "isolated problem", but the company is now openly sharing its thoughts on and initiatives to combat Cisco test cheating.

Cisco updates CCVP program

Cisco Monday updated the exams and courseware for its Cisco Certified Voice Professional certification to cover its Cisco Unified Communications Manager 6.0 product. The new exams and courseware are available now and replace exams and courseware that supported Cisco Unified CallManager 5.0. Cisco will continue to support and make available exams and courseware for the CCVP certification based on the older Cisco Unified CallManager 4.1 product as recognition of the "many customers [that] have made significant investments around [CallManager 4.1]."

CCIEs and the money they make

If you're feeling bogged down by your CCIE exams, think of the Benjamins (if that rocks your boat). My fellow blogger Michael Morris, who blogs for Cisco Subnet, is a CCIE and was approached by a recruiter pitching him a job in the DC area that paid between $135k to $155k. Michael says that's a bit less than what he thinks is the going rate in a high-cost area. CCIEs in the SF Bay Area for instance, won't get out of bed for less than $200k ... Read his blog here.

Cisco Networking Academy celebrates 10 years

Cisco's Networking Academy celebrates its 10th anniversary this week with a delegation in Capitol Hill, led by CEO John Chambers, urging governments and business to join together to provide technical skills and education to the next generation of workers.

The academy provides technical education through institutions, such as schools, community colleges, and universities, and prepare students for the CCNA and CCNP certifications. So far, the academy has trained 2 million students in 160 countries. Cisco has so far invested $300 million into the academy.

According to Cisco's survey of academy students, 91% said they use their newly aquired IT skills on a daily basis, and 40% reported the program has had a significant positive impact on their careers.

Sample (Timed) CCNA Exam Question

Today I’m changing gears a bit and moving back to exam content rather than exam strategies – while always keeping in mind the average 1:10 or so for the average exam question. We had a great response on last week’s survey, where lots of people answered as to how long it took them to answer the question. So, I’ll try another survey with this question, again so we can all get a general idea of the time taken – at least for the group that’s watching this space.

By the way, last Wednesday’s survey for last week’s subnetting question has 57 votes as of this morning, with roughly 1/3 (20 votes) getting into the 90+ seconds category, and 7% (4) getting the answer in less than 15 seconds.

New CCIE routing and switching written exam (v3.0) being released June 19, 2007

The new CCIE Routing and Switching Written Exam v3.0 (350-001) will be available at all worldwide, Cisco-authorized testing centers beginning June 19th, 2007. The new exam has 100 multiple-choice questions and is two hours in duration. Candidates preparing for the new exam after June 18th should refer to the new CCIE Routing and Switching Written Exam 3.0 Blueprint for an outline of topics that will be covered.
