RE: YouTube outage underscores big Internet problem

We place a lot of inter-personal trust in the way the Internet is managed. Most BGP router owners are judicious about their work but this shows the flaws in the process. Are we supposed to inspect every packet, every router table?

If you haven't checked out Cisco Subnet's growing group of bloggers you should find some time to do so. Our list of bloggers include the well-known author Jeff Doyle, respected trainer Wendell Odom, tireless Cisco watcher Brad Reese, and network professionals Michael Morris and Jamey Heary, who every day get hands-on experience with Cisco gear. As well as bringing you their take of the latest Cisco happenings, our bloggers also offer readers valuable how-to guides and lessons learned from their work using Cisco and other networking technologies. We've compiled a list of just some of the networking hints and tips written by Cisco Subnet bloggers over the past year:

RE: 'Radical rethinking' of Internet routing under way

Maybe the BGP implemntations should be re-written to be more effective. BGP in Cisco must have parts that are quite old and can be done more effectively today. Just take a look at OpenBGPD which is an example that a BGP implementation can save more memory.

Keeping on Top of BGP Best Practices

In response to my previous post about performing occasional BGP best-practice reviews, Sean writes:

Where does one go to keep on top of these things? Too much noise on NANOG. Hrm, maybe if RIPE offered an RSS feed of those documents...

And taking the bull by the horns, he then created his own RIPE RSS feed. Here it is:

Is Your BGP Up to Snuff?

Routing best practices change and evolve as we collectively gain experience, and this is nowhere more true than with the Internet itself. Because of the vast and growing economic and cultural dependency on the Internet, that ultimate “network of networks” is subject to a level of scrutiny and analysis far beyond what any mere enterprise network undergoes. There are a tremendous number of amazingly intelligent, diligent, committed people striving to make the Internet better.

Because of these efforts, BGP best practices change faster than those of other routing protocols. If you aren’t paying attention, you can get left behind.

BGP (Border Gateway Protocol)

BGP (Border Gateway Protocol), as defined in IETF RFCs 1771 and 1772, performs inter-domain routing in TCP/IP networks, handling routing between multiple autonomous domains. Routers use BGP to maintain a consistent view of the internetwork topology.
