Microsoft fixes critical worm hole in Windows Server

Microsoft issued two patches that fix three holes, in Windows Server and PowerPoint.
Submitted by Microsoft Subnet on Tue, 05/10/11 - 4:27pm.

As part of its monthly Patch Tuesday cycle, Microsoft issued a critical patch, MS11-035, that fixes a rare hole affecting all versions of Windows Server, even Server Core. The vulnerability is in the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS). It could allow remote code execution if a user received an evil WINS replication packet on a system running the WINS service.

Why does my Windows Server 2008 machine register all of its IP addresses into DNS?

All IP addresses are registered on the DNS servers when the IP addresses are assigned to one network adapter.
Submitted by tyson.kopczynski on Mon, 06/28/10 - 12:58am.

Ran into this issue the other day and I figured that I would share. Basically, I was setting up a DirectAccess deployment and the customer wanted to stick the NLS instance on an existing Exchange Server 2007 CAS server. OK… no problem. Let’s add another IP address, create another Web site, and change the Web site bindings so that each site binds to a single IP address.

Five arguments for a Microsoft upgrade

Reseller says new features save the cost of third party apps
Submitted by Robert Mullins on Wed, 05/12/10 - 4:19pm.

With today's release of Microsoft Office 2010 to business users, IT managers are likely doing some serious number-crunching to see if it's worth it for their organization to migrate to it. But there's also a whole range of Microsoft enterprise software that Redmond wants you to consider besides Office.

Productivity Hazards of Windows Updates

Patching quickly is a security must but it can cost you in productivity.
Submitted by Mitchell Ashley on Mon, 11/30/09 - 10:22am.

Patch Tuesday. Windows updates. Microsoft Office updates. It's a necessary evil, making sure your Windows computers are up to date with the latest vulnerability patches. Patch "whatever day" for Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and others are now simply part of our normal IT process. Next to anti-malware and succumbing to some type of phishing attack, keep computers updated with the latest patches is essential for maintaining good security.

Just How Much Is Riding on Windows 7 For Microsoft?

And will Windows 7 help Microsoft turn around disappointing earnings reports?
Submitted by Mitchell Ashley on Fri, 10/23/09 - 9:09am.

In a word, Windows 7 means "everything" for Microsoft's future. We can all talk about the insane number of SharePoint licenses sold, how well Windows Server 2008 has been put together, Bing's surprising rise in the search market, and exciting moves by Microsoft into Online Services for hosted Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and Office Web Online. But the bottom line is if Windows 7 flops, it's a steep slippery slope to the bottom for Redmond, with lots of competitors from Google to Apple ready to further sling grease on the skids for Microsoft's fall. Everything.

Six reasons why Microsoft struggles with innovation

Microsoft invents a lot of great stuff but finds itself stuck when it comes to implementation.
Submitted by Microsoft Subnet on Mon, 08/24/09 - 5:35pm.

When I think of Exchange 2010 and its hybrid approach to cloud computing, it reminds me that Microsoft can be innovative. With Exchange 2010, users can keep some e-mail accounts on premises while sending others to the cloud. It strikes a good balance between maintaining what customers want in an e-mail server product while gently leading them into next-generation cloud e-mail. But Exchange's hybrid approach is the exception. Overall, Microsoft struggles mightily with innovation for these six hard-to-fix reasons.

SharePoint Grabs Attention of The New York Times

Open source advocate begrudgingly acknowledges Microsoft's successful Trojan horse strategy
Submitted by Mitchell Ashley on Wed, 08/12/09 - 12:02am.

You know something's hot when non-tech publications talk about a product technology like Microsoft SharePoint. Ashlee Vance of the New York Times has an article talking about SharePoint's success even with our downed economy. It's not popular these days to be positive about a market dominator like Microsoft, and there has been bad news with Microsoft earnings, but you have to give Microsoft their due when it comes to successes like SharePoint.

Microsoft GPL Linux Drivers First Legit Open Source Contribution

Dawn of a new day or Microsoft validation of the GPL software model?
Submitted by Mitchell Ashley on Mon, 07/20/09 - 3:47pm.

While Microsoft has made some prior moves to be more friendly towards open source (albeit slightly more friendly), Microsoft's GPLv2 contribution of Linux drivers will be seen as the first legitimate Microsoft move by the Linux open source and user communities. Microsoft's cozy relationship with Novell and SUSE, and their implied threats about Linux infringing on Microsoft's patents, have left most to believe Microsoft isn't serious about working with the Linux crowd.

The New Features of Windows Server 2008 that All MCITP’s Should Study

Here are the major changes in Windows Server 2008 that will help you focus on the MCITP exams.
Submitted by Bryan Sullins on Sat, 07/11/09 - 7:55am.

It would be stating the obvious to say that the MCITP is harder than the MCSE; it is by a long shot. But what I found when I upgraded is that it is deceptively so. Here are the major changes in Windows Server 2008 that will help you focus on the MCITP exams. Although this is not an all-inclusive list, this should help you concentrate on the major changes that will take up most of your time studying.

Apple's Window To Gain PC Market Share Is Narrowing

Windows 7 Won't Be Like Vista and Mac OS X Isn't Going Away Either
Submitted by Mitchell Ashley on Wed, 06/17/09 - 4:14am.

My recent blog post about the new Apple OS X Snow Leopard release not being enough to “beat” Windows 7 sparked quite a response from many Apple users. I understand that, when users are passionate about a product, brand and/or a company, as so many Apple users are. Apple’s always been successful at building loyalty with their customers.

WS2008 R2 to be available Oct. 22, too

Submitted by Microsoft Subnet on Wed, 06/03/09 - 9:51pm.

Some days, we feel sorry for the Windows Server developers for living in the shadow of Windows 7. Windows Server 2008 R2 will be available on the same day as Windows 7. This is smart on Microsoft's part given how closely linked the two operating systems are. Final code of the server will be released to manufacturers in mid to late July.

You can download and start testing the latest beta of WS2008 R2 Download and start testing with the RC candidate here.

New tool manages Windows Server remotely from Win7

Submitted by Microsoft Subnet on Wed, 05/06/09 - 4:38pm.

Microsoft today released its Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC). According to Microsoft, the tools let IT administrators manage roles and features on Windows Server 2008 R2 (and, for some features, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2003) from a remote computer running Windows 7 RC.

Microsoft says:

Windows 7 RC1 and Vista SP2 – Two Drastically Different Release Paradigms

Submitted by Mitchell Ashley on Thu, 04/30/09 - 3:03am.

I’ve been really struck over the past few days by the difference in approaches between the Windows 7 RC1 and Vista SP2 releases. Windows 7 beta and RC1 have been handled much like the new Obama administration, emphasizing transparency and quickly addressing issues. We received plenty of notice there would be at least one Windows 7 RC and I fully expect the RC1 download to be available on TechNet and MSDN tomorrow as Microsoft promised.

Back to the Future?

Submitted by Glenn Weadock on Wed, 04/29/09 - 1:17am.

I got to thinking today about the mainframe and minicomputer environments that I worked with in college and in my first few years as a practicing IT consultant. And it occurred to me that maybe that model is not such a bad one. There are lots of challenges that we face in a modern Windows environment that were just not an issue on (say) the DEC VAX.

Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 Bring Us DNSSEC. Will We Use It?

Submitted by Mitchell Ashley on Tue, 04/28/09 - 3:21am.

Network security always seems to be driven by the latest "thing", whether that be a virus or a bot like conficker, or a technology like NAC (Network Access Control) that was in vogue was for several years. Security is hot technology and hot ulnerability/attack driven, at least that seems to be what gets all of the attention. Today's theme, at least as evidenced by the reporting from RSA, is cloud security.
