Security costs too much for many organizations, is open source security the answer?
Submitted by Alan Shimel on Mon, 10/17/11 - 12:44pm.
Having been in the infosec world for more than 10 years, I have learned the hard way that there are some real issues around effective security for everyone. One of them is that security is hard and seems to be getting harder. As a result security is also very expensive. So expensive that only the largest of organizations who put a high value on securing their assets can afford it. Read more
Purdue yet to answer how the Nexus won when it did not fill the rfp requirements.
Submitted by Larry Chaffin on Mon, 08/08/11 - 11:21am.
Over the last week I have received many emails about a story on the net. The story is all about Cisco giving Purdue University a 76% discount on the Nexus Product line. How they got to that number was a combination of Cisco math (discount, trade in on obsolete Cisco Switches) of which every customer by now is used to. The comments vary a great deal, I have listed them below and removed names.
"What does this say about Cisco list pricing if they give 76% off to a customer" Read more

This week I have streaming video content and TV on my mind. Actually I've had it on my mind for some time because some months ago I picked up a Panasonic BD 655 Blu-Ray player from Costco for $160.
This player comes with Panasonic's Viera Cast streaming service. Among the content sources supported is Netflix Watch Instantly which I immediately fell in love with.

Friends, Romans, Countrymen. Lend me your ears. I come here today to bury Microsoft, not to praise them - Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation
My fellow Network World writer, Jon Brodkin has an article up today about an interview he had with Jim Zemlin, the Linux Foundation Executive Director. Zemlin is an unabashed Linux advocate and not a big fan of Microsoft. But even taking what he says with a grain of salt, you have to laugh when he says Read more

Today Android, tomorrow the world
Submitted by Alan Shimel on Mon, 03/21/11 - 2:22pm.
Rumors are running rampant that tomorrow Amazon will announce that they are launching their very own Android App Store. This app store will compete with the Google run Android market already operating. Does the Android market need two app stores? I guess we will find out. More importantly for me though is that this is a bit of turnaround is fair play on Google. Read more

This is the month for deals with Christmas coming soon and Black Friday is right around the corner. So, will we see a Cisco Telepresence product on sales during Black Friday? Read more
Open source is not competitive to the cloud
Submitted by Alan Shimel on Thu, 11/11/10 - 12:51pm.
I am not sure why some people think this, but yesterday I read two articles that clearly seem to pit open source versus cloud solutions and open source versus managed services. In my mind nothing can be further than the truth. In fact open source is the great enabler of both of these technologies. Much of the underpinnings of the cloud are in fact open source based.
