Submitted by Layer 8 on Tue, 12/20/11 - 1:56pm.

NASA's star-gazing telescope Kepler has added to its amazing discoveries list by spying the first Earth-size planets orbiting a Sun-like star outside our solar system.

NASA says while the planets are too close and too hot to the star to be in the so-called habitable zone where liquid water could exist , they are the smallest exoplanets ever confirmed around a star like our Sun.

SchoonerSQL - MySQL On Steroids

For those who demand more, Schooner does a better MySQL than Oracle
Submitted by Alan Shimel on Wed, 11/02/11 - 8:34am.

While MySQL has been an unqualified success, there have always been whispers and regrets from those looking to use the open source database in mission critical situations. If you need five 9's type of availability and other large enterprise features, MySQL may not have been able to scale up for you. But of course if you were Oracle and you owned MySQL, that was not too large a problem because if MySQL wasn't enterprise enough, they had another database that they could sell you that would scale to the biggest jobs.

Submitted by Joe Brockmeier on Mon, 04/18/11 - 5:31pm.

Is Oracle getting a bad rap for admitting defeat with OpenOffice.org already? Matthew Aslett seems to think so. While Aslett is right that Sun had the ball much longer, Oracle shouldn't be held blameless either.

Submitted by Alan Shimel on Wed, 12/01/10 - 2:46pm.

In the year 2011 we will in all likelihood see the first company to reach a billion dollars in revenue with an open source focused model.  Dan Woods over on Forbes.com has an excellent piece highlighting Red Hat as the first and probably only company in the foreseeable future to reach this truly epic milestone. According to Dan there have been only about 20 software companies or so that have reached the billion dollar revenue model.

It's rare to see anyone stick up for Microsoft's ugly tactics, but it's refreshing to see somebody trying to rally for Redmond — even if they are wrong.

Settlement clears legal obstacles and ends Ellison's 'crazy talk'
Submitted by Paul McNamara on Tue, 09/21/10 - 8:48am.

So the war between Oracle and HP lasted all of two weeks. Seems about right for this sort of thing.

It was only the day after Labor Day that Oracle boss Larry Ellison was ranting and ranting some more about HP's audacity in kicking up a legal fuss over the prospect of its banished ex-CEO Mark Hurd spilling company secrets to his new employer, Oracle. Ellison went so far as to suggest that the matter cast into doubt future dealings between the technology heavyweights, who reportedly share some 140,000 customers.
