Tell Us What You Think of Exinda’s x800

Australian upstart Exinda Networks is in this week’s “ADS Customers Speak” spotlight. While leading US vendors like Riverbed, Cisco, Juniper, Packeteer and Blue Coat focus on high-end, high-performance application delivery solutions, this strappy little company from down under is racing after the middle market—which may well be larger overall than the top-of-the-line market. This week we ask Exinda’s customers’ to share their experiences with the Exinda x800 product.

Tell Us What You Think of Riverbed’s Steelhead

While we were at spring Interop we heard a consistent theme from application delivery vendors that went something like this: "Other vendors say things about our products that aren't true to make them look better. Customers love our products and they can tell you the truth." So starting now and continuing every Wednesday for the coming weeks, we want to hear the voices of each major ADS vendor's customers - one vendor at a time. Today we start with Riverbed's Steelhead product--only because Riverbed is the largest pure-play WAN optimization vendor.

WAN acceleration smack-down at Interop: Are you in?

The challenge is open to Cisco, Riverbed, Juniper and Blue Coat and the vendors have until Friday to respond.

Microsoft and Cisco Enhance Branch Offices Through Integration of Windows Server 2008 and Cisco WAAS

Is Doom and Gloom ahead for Microsoft?

Below is a link to the story; surprise, surprise Cisco and Microsoft have no idea when this will be out. But my questions is what is Microsoft going to do when they figure out that the solution they are going to push to Server 2008 customers using the WAAS is not that good. Cisco WAAS is not even the best in the industry; do they read Gartner and Forrester Reports? I wonder if this is a last ditch effort from Cisco to salvage the WAAS by using Microsoft to push it on customers? I think this is the only way Cisco could get any kind of market share with the WAAS. What is Microsoft thinking?

The only thing that I hope Microsoft includes in this new Server 2008 with WAAS is a shut off button for the WAAS.

Performance Optimization Services from AT&T and Verizon

AT&T and Verizon Business are the only US carriers we know of that offer application performance optimization services built on distributed ADS (application delivery system) technologies from the likes of Packeteer, Riverbed, Cisco and Juniper. More common among US carriers are MPLS services providing less potent "in the cloud" traffic management. We note that distributed ADS services are more widespread outside the US.

App Performance Services from Vanco and Orange Business Services

Orange Business Services and Vanco are two forward-thinking service providers offering managed application performance optimization services. They cater to multinational companies (Orange through its Equant acquisition), which places them smack in the sweet spot of the distributed application delivery system benefits we talked about in yesterday's blog - and they are making the most of it.

Wanted: Mobile Applications Acceleration

Mobile Applications Acceleration

Today my Verizon phone running windows mobile was running really slow, it made me think of my last Cisco-Riverbed article and wonder. I made mention that I had told the CTO of Riverbed that they really need a mobile phone client. With that I wanted to put questions out there to everyone and ask; who will come out with a mobile phone client for applications acceleration? Do you think there is a market for the product in the enterprise space or the mid to small business market? What kind of performance do you think we will see in data reduction?

Will Cisco ever catch Riverbed or should they just get out now?

I want to start off with an excerpt from a Gartner paper by Mark Fabbi, it was put out back on March 15, 2007. This paper was written for the Cisco Applications Network Services, an before we go farther the Cisco WAAS is a part of this service. Plus we can look at it as a standalone product.

From a product perspective, Cisco's progress through 2006 has been, at best, mixed and largelydisappointing. Cisco is a late entrant to an innovative and dynamic market, and it is "playingcatch-up" across all market segments. Despite new product announcements during 2006, Ciscostill lags behind the market.

Cisco loses to Riverbed in WAN optimization bake-off

Being a self-confessed "Cisco fan" wasn't enough to convince Adam Rasner, director of corporate network services at Rayonier, to give Cisco the prize of consolidating locations at the forestry and real estate company.
RE: Packeteer introduces plan for guaranteeing WAN application performance

I think this sounds like an interesting approach to ultimately providing better performance to the end user. Yet with the cost of bandwidth decreasing and products like Riverbed's Steelhead solution accelerating applications, I am curious to see how this will play out.

Its good to see Silver Peak trying to improve its solution offering. Will be interesting to see what features and functions start to win out over others. Currently Riverbed's Mobile Solution has been a huge hit with our customers.

RE: Transportation authority speeds up WAN with Silver Peak

I wonder why he was told that the switches needed upgrading. We have not seen that with our customer deployments of Riverbed's appliances. In some of our Riverbed / Silver Peak bake offs customers tend to find the configuration of tunnels on the Silver Peak appliance to be overwhelming.

RE: Finding Cisco's competition

In my experience, as an engineer for a Cisco partner that is also partnered with Riverbed for WAN optimization solutions, I can say that Riverbed seems to be the best technology for WAN acceleration. In the bake offs Cisco has a very hard time winning against Riverbed. Cisco tries to sell on price because they can't win with the WAAS technology. This is the first time that I've seen Cisco trying to win deals by being the "cheaper" solution. In the past, they always sold on technology and sold for a premium. We'll see if they can ever catch Riverbed. I have a lot of comparison data on all the competitors if anyone is interested. Forrester, Gartner, etc... Just shoot me an email.

RE: Riverbed upgrades boost big WAN transfers

Another step in Riverbed's continued innovation in the WAN optimization and application acceleration arena. We are deploying the Steelhead appliances like crazy for our customers. They really change the way businesses deal with applications and backup. Good stuff!

RE: Learning from experience

Network World also reported back in June (http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/061107-liz-claiborne-wan-acceleration.html) that Liz Claiborne depends on Riverbed throughout its network. The previous article points out that Riverbed is used to accelerate e-mail, file sharing, and the like, as well as its collaborative design platform. I think it's interesting to see how companies might deploy multiple WAN optimization products, one for monitoring and another for application acceleration.

Re: This newsletter.

RE: Catching up with Riverbed Technology

I think Riverbed will only grow to stay the leader in its domain. The main reason is primarily the focus on this market unlike everyone else...
