I'll be on an airplane in a few hours bound for Las Vegas and Interop 2012. Here's what I'm expecting at the show:
1. SDN, the sequel. With the Open Networking Summit (ONS) last month and Interop this week, software-defined networking is the gift that keeps on giving. Interop will feature an OpenFlow plug-fest and lots of rhetoric. What I'm looking for, however, are real use cases, mature products, and actual implementation. I'd like to see an SDN-based data center fabric for example -- perhaps IBM and NEC will have something to show. Read more
VMware coined the term VDI years ago when its virtual desktop product was so creatively named VMware VDI. Since then, VMware changed the product name to View and has been working hard to take advantage of its strong vSphere footprint inside the data center. Today, VMware announced its latest release of View which is important, but not as interesting as a few other announcements the company slid in. Read more
Last week EMC launched its eagerly awaited VSPEX architecture. VSPEX is a turnkey reference architecture made up of best-of-breed partners to deliver an end-to-end cloud solution. The solution, while led by EMC, also involved collaboration from such partners as Brocade, Cisco, Intel, Microsoft and VMware. VSPEX is another option for customers who do not want to build their own from scratch nor want a converged solution like VCE. It’s a proven solution that’s been validated by EMC. Read more
The Microsoft Management Summit in Las Vegas was the backdrop for a rather unsurprising bit of news: Windows Server "8” will officially be named Windows Server 2012 and will be released this calendar year.
The news came as part of the rollout for System Center 2012, the latest edition of the company’s system management environment. Corporate Vice President Brad Anderson channeled the spirit of Steve Jobs and called Server 2012 "the most amazing release of Windows Server that we've ever done." Read more
I'm attending Microsoft Management Summit 2012 this week and had an interesting observation in one of my sessions. I always ask (and make a little joke out of asking) "Who is using VMware?" and as you would expect, the majority of the room raise their hand. No surprise. I asked the same question during one of my sessions at MMS and I received the same result. Read more
It would seem that VMware has a love/hate relationship going on with open source and the cloud. Read more
EMC VSPEX is further evidence that the IT infrastructure consumption model is changing. VSPEX is ultimately a new menu item for select EMC partners. From the outside, VSPEX has a consistent look of a packaged solution, but it is what is available on the inside that gets interesting. A customer will be able to customize a VSPEX based on hypervisor preference (Citrix, Microsoft, or VMware), Cisco servers, Cisco or Brocade networking, and multiple flavors of EMC storage. Read more

You have to give Dell a lot of credit. As the company recognized changes in the industry, it was willing to move beyond efficient PC/server manufacturing and distribution into new technologies and labor-intensive services. In my domain, this led to the acquisition of SecureWorks and Force10. Today, Dell took another step into end-to-end solutions by grabbing security veteran SonicWall. Read more
Less than a week before the RSA Conference in San Francisco and my telephones are ringing off the hook. People want to discuss a variety of topics including APTs, mobile security, cloud security, big data analytics, and so on. Read more
Is it too early or too late to declare 2012 the year of SDN? A few weeks ago, IBM and NEC introduced integrated technologies around OpenFlow for enterprise data centers. Last week, HP announced OpenFlow support with 16 switch models. Finally, early this week, Nicira went public with its Distributed Virtual Network Infrastructure (DVNI).
IBM and NEC announced this week that the two companies will work together to offer networking solutions based upon SDN and OpenFlow. IBM provides the switches which are integrated with the NEC Programmable Flow Controller.
To me, this is bigger than just a press release and some joint marketing programs. Here’s why:
Data center consolidation and server virtualization are creating data centers of massive scale, and thus radically changing the data center environment. Unfortunately, legacy data center networking equipment was not designed for this type of scale and dynamic use case. ESG calls this state data center networking discontinuity.
Why did dinosaurs become extinct? I’m no paleontologist but allow me to provide an over-simplified explanation: When the environment went through radical alterations, dinosaurs couldn’t adequately adapt to these changes. In a binary, “adapt or die” world, the dinosaurs died.
A similar binary situation is developing with data center networks. On the one hand, the environment is going through some radical changes. According to ESG Research:
Back last April I wrote about VMware releasing a new open source PaaS solution called Cloud Foundry. At the time I said that VMware wanted to break Google and Microsoft's lock on PaaS, which many people consider the future of the cloud. Read more
As I transitioned from the weekend to the work week last night, I settled down to review the 20 Critical Security Controls (v3) published by the SANS Institute. If you haven’t seen this list, you really should take a look as it’s an extremely focused, well written, metrics-based strategy for protecting your organization against the most likely security risks.
The first two controls are:
1. Inventory of authorized and unauthorized devices.
2. Inventory of authorized and unauthorized software.
Just what is a "network fabric?" Generally, the term is used to describe a low-latency, loss-less, converged, flat network architecture for data centers. That said, the term has been co-opted by marketing types so its hard to know what "network fabric" means anymore. Read more

Howie Xu has been at VMware since he co-invented and helped to launch the vSwitch. After leading the development efforts for VMware's networking for much of the past 9 years, Howie joined OpenFlow startup Big Switch Networks. I had the chance to sit down with Howie to discuss his new role as VP of Engineering for Big Switch Networks, why he left VMware, and his take on the future of networking. Read more
