Why analysts expect another painful Microsoft earnings on Thursday

Microsoft has a relatively easy fix: quit wasting billions on R&D

Brace yourself for another round of screaming headlines on Thursday when Microsoft announces its third quarter results. Analysts expect Microsoft to report income of 36 cents per share on $14.4 billion in sales for the quarter ended in June, reports Businessweek. That would be its second year-over-year drop compared to the year-ago quarter. In 3Q 2008, Microsoft earned 46 cents per share on $15.8 billion in revenue.

RE: Microsoft licenses traffic technology it developed

Could licensing get any more complicated than this? The very first company to license technology from Microsoft Research is now licensing it back to Microsoft. Inrix initially licensed predictive, real-time traffic technology from Microsoft Research in 2005. Now Microsoft will license Inrix real-time, historical and predictive traffic data in online properties such as Live Search Maps, as well as in mobile applications.
