Why does Cisco care about HP's Colubris buy?

Interesting that Cisco's Analyst Relations blog wants to know your views on the recent move by HP to acquire WLAN vendor Colubris. Nicole Hall, writing in Cisco's blog poses a question: "This gives ProCurve, HPs networking division, their .11n and vertical angle ...so does this mean ProCurve will become a 'Real' player in WLAN? Interested in your thoughts?" Why does Cisco care?

Well, here are some thoughts from John Cox, Network World senior editor who follows the wireless industry:

Inaccurate/Fuzzy Details?

I read elsewhere that HP denies having *any* relationship with this company -- were facts checked for this story? Also, details provided seem very fuzzy about a potential product that "could result in an adaptor...onto a HP or CA product." Yikes!

Also, quoting analyst research by a "former IDC analyst"?

No substitute for "having your own" solution...

That holds especially true in a market that has such upside. I am not sure Colubris has the independent type AP mesh architecture like some companies although they do promise some fairly incredible backbone traffic savings numbers. HP may be shooting for a completely different market here than most vendors based on the more typical Colubris customer though. The pricing looks very aggressive right off the bat as well but I would have to see details.

Cloud computing chums

From the IDG News Service:

Hewlett-Packard, Intel and Yahoo are partnering for cloud computing research and education in order to advance the development and adoption of large-scale, data-intensive Internet-hosted applications and related IT infrastructure.

By banding together, the trio of computer industry titans hopes to foster collaboration among vendors, universities and government agencies around cloud computing, whose progress is hampered by "financial and logistical barriers," the companies said Tuesday.

READ THE REST HERE

HP, Intel, Yahoo team up on cloud computing

Like Google and IBM before them, HP, Intel and Yahoo are joining forces to kick-start cloud-computing research.
Former Hewlett Packard VP stole IBM trade secrets

A former vice president of imaging and printing services at Hewlett Packard pleaded guilty today to stealing IBM trade secrets and faces up 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 and a three-year term of supervised release.

The Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation said Atul Malhotra had been charged with one count of information with theft of trade secrets. According to court documents, from Nov. 17, 1997, to April 28, 2006, Malhotra worked at IBM as director of sales and business development in output management services for IBM Global Services.

What is all the fuss

I'm still trying to sort this out. This may turn out to be a great move by HP, but it is based on Sepaton's technology which has been considered across the industry to be 3rd tier. This doesn't mean that it is bad or that it doesn't work, but there is not much brand recognition and they certainly are not in the top 3 of VTL developers. I'd like to see HP distinguish this new VTL/DeDupe combo from the competition to better understand their advantages.

Big 4 management vendors squeak by with a passing grade, garner little confidence from Gartner attendees

If IT infrastructure and operations management specialists could hand out report cards to BMC, CA, HP and IBM, the comment they might include would be: "Shows slight improvement."

An impromptu poll of more than 355 attendees (exact number of responses were difficult to calculate on-the-fly) at the Gartner Infrastructure and Operations Management Summit in Orlando Monday showed that 50% of attendees in the keynote session would give the market-leading big four management vendors a grade of C. Some 17% gave the big four a D grade, 4% determined they deserved an F and 15% offered the "incomplete" option. One percent said the market leaders deserved an A and 14% gave them a B.

HP support

HP has no handle on what they lost in intellectual capital when they decimated the HP response centers of experts with years of experience who didn't need to go down a template and ask you if you had it plugged in first, thinking, "oh yeah" outsourcing is great and if we are the same as our competitors ( they say that all the time to employess) then dumbing down makes good sense and saves money too. After all, despite what they say, they don't care about anybody but the top 200 companies and the channel organization. Afer all the channel costs them nothing compared to an HP employee.

What does Hooks mean?

"The partnership lets HP software have hooks in VMware's VirtualCenter that would, for instance, let customers perform more "dynamic capacity management" of virtual environments"

So are they just accessing the standard API's, did they get access to the community source project or something else? It looks like a good strategic marketing relationship currently.

Leaving Las Vegas

HP Software Universe wraps up today and the vendor succeeded in hosting thousands of customers in Las Vegas, while HP made significant news around its broad software portfolio. HP executive management admitted to customers it has shortcomings in its support organization and announced a technology development partnership with hypervisor market leader VMware that promises to give the management vendor an edge over competitors.

As I sit at McCarran International Airport tapping the free Wi-Fi (better connection than in my room at the Venetian) and fill the hour and a half delay (naturally) on my American flight, I wonder what I will be hearing from HP in the coming months, prior to next year's installment of Software Universe.

HP and VMware: A match made in management heaven?

HP's news today that it would expand its partnership with VMware to include deeper technology integrations and future product development could send the competition scrambling to acquire virtual systems management capabilities.

"This deal is hot and it's the first of its kind that involves a major management vendor doing R&D and development work with VMware," says Evelyn Hubbert, a senior analyst with Forrester Research. "They need to deliver a product road map to prove there is substance behind this partnership."

Less Data centers means less resilience?

Certainly reducing from 80+ centers was prudent. Going to 6? Hmm? Didn't the IDC guys predict back in 2000 that datacenters and hosting would be a 27 billion dollar business? I think they missed by a HUGE amount!

HP Fails to promote and mention OpenVMS as always still going strong......

with a userbase that has stayed with it through so many different versions and hardware changes throughout the years. HP Support still stinks and that is the #1 problem with it and to come. It is really really really that bad unfortunately. You get better support at McDonalds for a #8 value meal for $4.95 then to pay HP 50,000.00/year for service and support.

5 things this reporter wants from HP

Reporting from HP's Technology Forum and Software Universe is presenting some challenges for this somewhat trade show savvy reporter. Covering show news in near-real time this week reminded me why despite the location, work travel is trying at the very least. I do hold out hope that the vendor hosting the show will think of the press, naive as it may seem, but once again I have come face-to-face with the reality of my station in the high-tech realm. While I remain committed and some may say oddly happy to cover HP news, this year I do have a few requests for the mega-vendor.

HP's showstoppers: Technology Forum & Expo and Software Universe

HP next week will host two conferences aimed at giving the mega-vendor's customers a look at new hardware, software and services. Each show features several tracks and sessions -- and keynote addresses by HP brass as well as a few unexpected guests.

For HP Technology Forum & Expo 2008 at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay, HP expects some 7,000 attendees. The vendor will bring out CEO Mark Hurd, CIO Randy Mott and Ann Livermore, executive vice president, to deliver addresses to HP's servers, storage and services customers.
