What's next for Microsoft's relationship with Apple?

So now that Bill Gates is no longer running Microsoft what will happen with Microsoft's relationship with Apple? The answer doesn't look too good for Mac faithfuls who actually want to use Microsoft software on Apple's hardware.

Michael Goonan writing in Appletell.com is worried:

Logitech offers Mac-enabled Webcam

It's hard to see how fans of the Mac would ever want to switch their Webcams from the iSight camera (maybe cost?), but Logitech feels that there's enough of a demand from the Mac faithful to offer them another choice. The company today launched its QuickCam Vision Pro Webcam for Mac, with advanced auto-focus and Carl Zeiss optics features. The $129.99 camera will be available in the U.S. and Europe in July.

The camera works with iChat and Skype applications on the Mac, and also includes a two megapixel sensor, Logitech says. In addition, the company's RightLight2 Technology automatically adjusts the Webcam for dim or harsh backlit situations. In addition to videoconferencing apps, the QuickCam Vision Pro can record video clips in 720p high-definition format (960 by 720 pixel resolution).

Are you ready to deploy Vista 64-bit?

Recently, a friend of mine (name will be with held for certain reasons) went on a tirade over the pain and suffering he endured while attempting to deploy Vista 64-bit. He was very passionate in the account of his deployment effort and conclusion that Vista 64-bit was "currently" not a deployable version of Windows. So, because he felt so strongly about this conclusion and had suffered so greatly from his encounter, I offered to immortalize his tale provided he wrote up a summary.

Office Communicator 7 for Mac Now Available

The Office Communicator team announced they've released Mac Messenger 7. Finally, an OCS 2007 compatible solution for Mac users! I can't say this has been a roadblock to any deployments I've done, Mac users have to be used to limited software availability, but it was a definite annoyance. We all know how Mac users are notoriously squeaky wheels.

Vista Really is That Bad

So I'm sitting here this beautiful, sunny weekend, in the office, running benchmarks. Of course, I really like running benchmarks, but not on beautiful, sunny weekends. The reason for this is that Microsoft's Windows Vista is a total piece of junk. I'd use stronger language than that if I could.

Is the Mac ready for the Enterprise?

As you may recall, Apple sent me a beautiful new iMac to play with and test in the hopes I would 'convert' to the Apple world... or at least be more aware about what is happening in the Apple world. For someone like me, the author of "Tricks of the Vista Masters " and speaker for Microsoft's TechEd Conference... it may be too late. But I sure am tempted after two weeks of playing with this system. Here is what I have discovered so far, which may be an eye opener for Windows admins and users:

Vista vs. Leopard... who will win?

As a tech writer, I go out on a limb sometimes to support a product. Especially as a Microsoft tech author, I take my stand with Microsoft products. That is not to say I enjoy being biased. Just that I have a "side" I tend to lean towards. Well, recently I made a comment about how much I loved Windows Vista and I got lambasted by the world at large with comments that range from technical explanations on how wrong I am to angry rants against Microsoft to people telling me to 'shut the hell up!' and ending with some just using profanity against me, Microsoft and Vista. It's amazing how tech gurus can spout off the cuss words like truckers when they feel inclined.

First, JJ (Jesper Jurcenoks of NetVigilance) told me to stop saying Macs were immune to hack attacks, and now Symantec says the same thing.
Why is use an Apple Mac (and its not because I hate Windows ... much)

Ok, ok, so I use an Apple Mac. As a freelance engineer I can make my own choices, and I thought long and hard before moving away from Windows. But really, it been no choice at all.

Most of the my recent work has been in security, (sometimes that doesn't leave me with much to talk about) and when I hit a new corporate site, no one is going to let you put that Windows notebook on the network are they ! No way.

Worse, they are going to push some rubbish onto your Windows with Group Policy and Windows installation is instantly poisoned one way or another. Maybe they even mandate virus software, NAC etc. Then all of the other detritus and modifications that corporate sysadmins add to make their lives easier (and noticeably, not mine).

The iPhone didn’t create hype, but it may have perfected it

It is sometimes hard to remember that the hype surrounding the Apple iPhone is really just one in a long history of overhyped products. My collegue Carolyn Marsan has constructed a look at what she considers to be the most hyped products beyond iPhone. We're talkin' Apple Mac and Newton, Segway, IBM OS/2 Warp, Oracle Network Computer and more. Read here.

Cisco confirmed a Cisco Trust Agent bug in Mac OS X installations that can allow hackers to access the "Systems Preferences" window to change passwords of all non-root user accounts, including admin accounts. Workarounds are available from Cisco.

The flaw was originally discovered by Adam Blake of Deloitte UK.

Go to Cisco Subnet for more Cisco discussions, news, security alerts, and book giveaways.

Google To Power Dot Mac

According to The Register Google is getting ready to power the Dot Mac Service from Apple.
I signed up for DotMac a couple of years ago for the princely sum of $99 per year for a whopping 1GB of storage, enough to store one rotation of an iPod Shuffle or my collection of Paris Hilton Snaps.
The concept of the service is superb offering Web storage, backup, chat and calender services etc etc.

However this amount of space is woefully inadequate and I soon abandoned using it.

Novell takes video shot at 'Get a Mac' ads

This is great.

PC and Mac kind of trading insults but they are interrupted by a pretty woman - Linux is her name and their destruction is her game. Or something like that. In addition here's a bonus Get a Mac ad that's a pretty funny shot at Microsoft's Vista security.

Someone forgot to train Microsoft support on Vista

Tales of woe are popping up in the blogosphere from owners of the newly minted Vista - including this one from Bill Nienaber, who purchased Vista for his iMac, plus an additional license for Home Premium. Things started to go wrong when the license key for his second machine didn't work and Microsoft support admitting that they hadn't been trained on Vista yet.
