Everex TC2502 Green gPC

Wal-Mart has announced that they are selling the Everex TC2502 Green gPC online and in select stores. Their web page includes a link (enable javascript) to find those stores (none within a hundred miles of me).

Everex is using a mini-ITX mobo and embedded processor in a full-sized case because Wal-Mart's research shows the consumer equates power and performance with size (I didn't think size mattered).

Key Features & Benefits:
# 1.5 GHz Via Technologies C7-D processor
      Delivers energy-saving performance
# 512 MB of DDR2 system memory
Offers good performance and is expandable to 2 GB
# 80 GB hard disk drive
Provides space for documents, games, photos and music
# DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive
Lets you play DVDs and burn your own CDs for entertainment
      and data backup
# 10/100 Mbps Ethernet
Connects to a local area network or broadband Internet
       devices
# gOS operating system
Enables you to use the supplied OpenOffice.org 2.2 software
      suite

gOS is Ubuntu with the Enlightenment GUI. Everex claims the box's performance equals Vista on much more expensive hardware. The initial batch of 10,000 looks like a test run -- support issues primarily.

Walmart begins selling $198 Linux computer

Will we look back on this day and see it as the beginning of the end? Or will it become yet another blip in the endless buzz that accompanies the IT industry?

Tomorrow, Walmart will begin selling a Linux PC for $198, the Everex Green gPC TC2502. The PC is loaded with links to Web 2.0 applications that run in a browser. A GUI desktop showcases icons to these Web apps on the bottom of the screen. The icons link to Google Docs, Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Meebo, Facebok, Wekipedia, among others. Skype and Gimp are also in there. OpenOffice is said to be installed, too, but not represented on the desktop at startup.

Crave.net posted an interesting review of the Everex:
