A little love goes a long way ... team site governance in SharePoint

There is no “one size fits all” model for SharePoint governance; it’s very important to target the governance model for both the type of site (publishing versus collaboration) and the “reach” (enterprise-wide versus team). However, even for sites where the audience of the site is a small team, a little bit of governance goes a long way. Balance is the key word for SharePoint team site governance. Too much governance and teams will find work-arounds. Too little governance and your users will spend far too much time reinventing the wheel.

Microsoft tries pricing ploy vs. Google Apps

Microsoft has officially invaded Google Apps' turf by opening up its Exchange and SharePoint Online products to just about everyone. And as part of the online onslaught, Microsoft is introducing a new a la carte pricing scheme aimed at undercutting Google Apps' one-price-fits-all model.

Microsoft makes SharePoint and Exchange cloud services available to all

Until today, only large companies could get SharePoint or Exchange as an online service available directly from Microsoft. Smaller customers could get hosted Exchange from numerous other suppliers (Intermedia, for example) and hosted SharePoint from numerous others (Apptix, for example) but not from Microsoft.

Installing Search Server 2008 Express, Episode Two

I went with the default choice and left the box checked, clicking the Close button... and the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard appeared. So I guess that was its real name. Microsoft Quality Control continues to underwhelm. If you don't care about the small stuff, how can you inspire trust with the big stuff?

How to do email management in SharePoint?

eMail management has become a high priority for all businesses, both large and small, with most written correspondence being delivered in email form. Businesses can use tools like SharePoint to manage most of their important business documents, but the inability to easily place emails into SharePoint and share those files within a document library is a problem that many SharePoint users have encountered.

Get "Social" with SharePoint

This week, I read a really great white paper from Microsoft called “How to Get the Most Value from Social Computing for Business with Microsoft.” The author provides a nice overview of social computing and then describes how existing features of SharePoint support each of the various elements. It may not be the definitive answer to the “I want Facebook for the enterprise” question, but it does a good job providing insights into how to leverage existing technology to achieve the outcomes that executives really want when they ask for “Facebook for just us.”

Microsoft's Secret Weapon Against Chrome: SharePoint

There's been much hullabaloo (I always wanted to use that in a sentence) about Chrome being "the next OS" and a challenge to Windows on the desktop. One idea is that it could be the "boot to browser" launching pad into the Google ecosystem of cloud-based applications however, as I noted before I see this being a bit of a niche market and nowhere in the Enterprise. Microsoft needed to respond if for no other reason than to quell the buzz. Matt Asay notes they preempted Chrome with the latest release of Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007).

From Matt's "The Open Road":

Microsoft Gives VMware ESX the Green Light

In the latest round of "I'll support your software if you support mine", Microsoft products running on VMware ESX servers are now qualified to receive support from Microsoft. That includes mission critical Microsoft software like Windows Server, Exchange, SQL Server and SharePoint. VMware ESX passed Microsoft's Server Virtualization Validation Program.
MOSS and the Search part

I have been busy working on Sharepoint (MOSS) recently, in particular configuring the search feature which is a handy tool for digging through shared content on our network.

I kept getting a particular problem with the sharepoint when running under Internet Explorer (Error: Object Expected) but have finally found a fix for it - and it was surprisingly simple, read more about it here MOSS: Fixing trouble with the Search webpart

SharePoint, Firefox, and IE 6. Oh my!

The following email from a friend speaks for itself

A bit of background: [redacted]'s Marketing department is about to re-launch the public website. And they chose to create the new version in Sharepoint, so that each department can maintain its own sections. For example, my department handles the Jobs section. Forget whether or not I think this is a good or bad idea, because I have no say in it. So anyway, we're in the process of building our sections, using the templates provided to us by IS, who built them for Marketing.

So, I just had this phone conversation with the IS guy who's leading the project:

Me: We're having some trouble with the templates. The spacing is really off.

Playing nicely with the other children: accessing SharePoint sites from an iPhone

I’ve been having a really interesting discussion via e-mail this week with John Cox and he’s been posting the dialogue to his blog post: iPhone opens up enterprise SharePoint sites. Consultant Steve Bell has found that he has been able to get full WSS access on sites he is developing for a client from the Safari browser on his iPhone. He writes about this on his blog and shows a really cool picture of a fully rendered WSS site on his iPhone.

iPhone opens up enterprise SharePoint sites

One big and so far unsung enterprise attraction for the iPhone may be that it can fully access SharePoint sites.

At least, that’s according to a couple of West Coast consultants who’ve been testing the iPhone on some SharePoint portals.

UPDATE: These portals were Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS 3.0), not repeat not the most recent Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007).

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server is one of the fastest growing Microsoft enterprise applications, a document management system recast for online collaboration and, increasingly, social networking. It’s a way to get a lot more real work done, than is possible with just Exchange-based email.

New SharePoint tools arrive from FAST acquisition

When Microsoft closed on its acquisition of FAST Search and Transfer about 45 days ago (April 25), the big question would be -- how long will it take to integrate the complex FAST engine with the complex SharePoint product? Answer is, not long -- at least for some initial functionality. The SharePoint team today released some new tools that brings FAST into SharePoint, according to the Microsoft Enterprise Search Blog.

Why search technologies are going to recombine

I gave a talk Monday starting from the premise that there are at least 8 separate text technology markets. But one of the concluding points was that many of these distinct markets are poised to recombine. Here are some examples of what I mean.

Microsoft / Nortel Move UC To The Cloud

We're now seeing the fruits of Microsoft and Nortel's alliance with this week's joint announcement to offer hosted unified communications. Looks like Nortel chose not to skip over Microsoft on this one, like Nortel did with the Social Security Administration deal. And this new announcement surpasses March's hybrid UC which still required on premise hardware. The real winner here is small and medium businesses, who no longer have to buy on premise software and hardware.
