Internet forefather Kleinrock gets President Bush's attention

President George W. Bush announced Monday that UCLA Distinguished Professor of Computer Science Leonard Kleinrock (shown here) has been selected to receive the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest scientific honor.

Kleinrock came up with the basic idea of packet switching as an MIT grad student and as a result is considered one of the creators of the Internet. His host computer at UCLA was Internet precursor ARPANET in 1969.

President exempts US Navy from environmental restrictions in Calif. training zone

In a highly controversial case, the US Navy played its trump card today as the President issued an order exempting the service from environmental laws and granted it permission to use sonar in training operations off the coast of California. At issue was the need to protect whales and dolphins from mid-frequency active sonar that could harm them, experts said.

White House goes green: Federal 2009 Budget to be delivered online

Looking to save $1 million, 20 tons of paper, or close to 500 trees, the White House said today President Bush’s 2009 Federal Budget will for the first time be posted online. The E-Budget will be available for downloading at the Office of Management and Budget Web site on Feb. 4.

GAO rips airline security, says it easily got bomb making materials past TSA screeners

With only a week before the busiest airline travel day of the year the Government Accounting Office today issued a scathing and chilling report on airline security: Bomb making materials costing less that $150 were purchased and carried past airport security screening in 19 US airports.
