My response to “my Vista 64-bit runs just fine"

I had several comments to my last posting "Are you ready to deploy Vista 64-bit? " These comments indicated that Vista 64-bit was a champ. Considering that my last posting was not necessarily my opinion. I wanted to weigh in on the comments that I have received.

New Vista Promises

Microsoft took their lumps from press and customers about Vista, something that happens with all their new operating systems. But they usually redeem themselves somewhat with the first Service Pack, called SP1. These major upgrades come out rarely (XP is only up to SP2 now) but they fix many shortcomings and add new features.

The news for Vista SP1 varies from that tradition. In A Closer Look: Beta Vista Service Pack 1, we read there are a few improvements, but nothing major enough to warrant the term “Service Pack.”

Vista SP1 inches closer to release

(Update 1/14/08: Microsoft has made the Vista SP1 code available to the general public. See comment below.) Microsoft is inching toward an actual release of an actual final Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista. On January 9 it sent a pre-release build to 15,000 beta testers. Microsoft promised that the final SP1 would meet a delivery date of sometime in the first quarter of 2008, though has not yet named the date. (What else is new? The world has been speculating on this SP1 release date since last summer.) We've lost count of how many pre-release candidates Microsoft has already released. In December, for instance, it let loose another one.

100 Million Vista Users?

Bill Gates, during his annual opening speech at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, claimed there are now 100 million Vista users. According to this story in ComputerWorld, he didn't offer any details about the origin of that nice, round number.

Vista Worries 9 of 10

Did you get Vista preloaded on a new computer, and now fight to get important applications to run and critical devices to connect? Although the Microsoft hype machine runs at full blast right now, don't think you're the only one with Vista problems.

9 of 10 IT pro respondents (of 961 surveyed) said they have concerns about migrating to Vista. With a headline like "Vista worries lead IT Pros to Consider Linux, Mac Alternatives," the news can't be easily "misinterpreted" or counted as a rounding error. If you don't like Vista, you're in the majority right now, along with IT folks from many huge companies.
