Is Cisco Chief Development Officer Charlie Giancarlo about the fly the Cisco nest? That's the question that eWeek is asking following Cisco's reorgnization of its development group last week, and the replacement of his usual fireside chat at the recent Cisco C-Scape conference.

Where Should Applications Live?

My apologies for being absent for a couple of days. I have been traveling for the past week an a half and will, the weather gods and US Air willing, hopefully make it home tonight. I'm presently in Washington, DC; yesterday was the last Network World IT Roadmap event of the year. Questions from the audience in my Enterprise Mobility session mostly involved network neutrality, not really surprising in a political town. Someone in the audience mentioned that Sprint wireless was blocking Google; I've not heard anything substantive about this. But it was remarkable that the level of interest in this topic was so high, especially since I like to focus on technology, not politics.

Cisco: Virtualization is coming to your home

Hang on to your hats! If implementing virtualization in your fancy new data center wasn't enough, Cisco has set its sights on providing virtualization to consumer desktops and set top boxes. According to Computerworld, reporting from Cisco's C-Scape conference, the network giant says virtualzation for consumers could mean that a service provider would host the virtualization capability, giving the end user the ability to run a thin client instead of a full PC, with storage and even computing functions undertaken at the hosting facility.

Cisco opens up IOS - Is it on its way to becoming a true software company?

Just a day after Juniper announced the opening up of its JUNOS operating system, Cisco announced similar plans to open up is venerable IOS routing software to third-party developers. The move will be the foundation for its metamorphosis into a software company.
