Cisco won't cut product prices despite challenging business outlook

The looming recession isn't going to move Cisco to cut the price of its networking gear, according to a report by Reuters. The news agency quotes Robert Lloyd, Cisco's senior vice president of the United States, Canada and Japan, as saying: "We do not expect to see any changes in terms of pricing." Cisco is often criticized for the high-price tag of its equipment compared to comparable products from its competitors.

Further reading:

Why an economic recession could leave companies wide open to cyber attacks

It seems that everyone and their brother are now saying that the U.S. is in the midst of a recession. The market analysts are predicting that the U.S. GDP will actually go negative this year. It must be official now that even the White House has acknowledged it. This got me to thinking about the effect a recession might have on my industry (IT security). My first thought was that if the profits of companies start dwindling then their IT budgets will predictably follow suit. If IT budgets dwindle then my experience tells me that the security budgets will take an even larger percentage hit than IT overall. When fighting for IT dollars in many cases security gets lost, put on hold, and brushed under the carpet.

Cisco Chambers not worried by impending recession

Cisco CEO John Chambers is bullish about future sales despite its first-quarter sales being affected by the mortgage crisis that's troubling its financial services customers. Speaking to reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show, Chambers said 12% to 17% growth was forseeable for the future. Chambers responded to questions over whether he would change Cisco's business plans even if the U.S. economy is hit by a recession, reports Reuters.

More Cisco Subnet items:
