Where are the Cisco acquisitions?

It's eerily quiet on the Cisco M&A front, notes the Inorganic Growth blog. While the market dissects Brocade's $3 billion purchase of Foundry and what it means to Cisco, Inorganic Growth blogs that Cisco has hardly used M&A at all this year - highly unusual for a firm that at one stage pocketed a company a month.

Pump and dump or slow economy?

Mitchell Ashley weighs in on Brad Reese's stunning blog post about Cisco's 3Q financials. Ashley says that Cisco's razor thin margins may be the culprit. Very interesting! Ashley writes:

Cisco earnings tops analysts expectations

Another great quarter for Cisco. In fact, Forbes reports that Cisco's results beat analysts estimates by about 2 cents/share. Really double digit growth is amazing for a company as large as, and as dominant as, Cisco. Of course, this is nothing new. Over the past eight quarter, the company has topped expectations, and, Forbes says, by an average of 2 cents a share. Weirdly, this hasn't resulted in much of a gain in the stock valuations. Of course, the stock jumps right after earnings are released but falls back the same-old-same-old price about a week later. All told, Forbes says the stock has been up only about a half a percent.

Nortel attacks Cisco with green calculator

Nortel's emphasis on green networking could make the vendor a more credible alternative to Cisco in the enterprise and data center. The company claims its products could provide a 50% boost in energy efficiency over competitive offerings -- Cisco being the No. 1 competitor in this market. Nortel also developed a TurboTax-like software program for evaluating the energy efficiency and resultant cost savings of its switches over Cisco's. So Cisco customers with green initiatives and contemplating a secondary or alternative source for their enterprise switches, may have to give the company a look.

It seems that Cisco's growth is becoming more reliant on its service provider and SMB sales

It seems that Cisco's growth is becoming more reliant on its service provider and small and medium business sales rather than its traditional stronghold in enterprises. Even technology areas where IT executives say they want to spend, such as security and wirless, are slated as areas where spending will drop below expectations. Branch office spending will fall shor of expectations, despite recent Cisco efforts to beef up its branch office router line.

Go to Cisco Subnet for more Cisco news, blogs, discussion forums, security alerts, book giveaways, and more.

One financial analyst who's not worried about Cisco's business outlook

UBS Warburg may have downgraded Cisco stock Thursday citing slowing orders and softness in U.S. and European enterprise markets, but on the same day, an analyst at Friedman, Billings, Ramsey gave Cisco an "outperform" coverage. According to an Associated Press report, FBR analyst Brian Coyne said demand for Cisco networking gear would continue at a pace faster that its competitors, and that its large size would allow it to move aggressively into new markets.

Cisco won't cut product prices despite challenging business outlook

The looming recession isn't going to move Cisco to cut the price of its networking gear, according to a report by Reuters. The news agency quotes Robert Lloyd, Cisco's senior vice president of the United States, Canada and Japan, as saying: "We do not expect to see any changes in terms of pricing." Cisco is often criticized for the high-price tag of its equipment compared to comparable products from its competitors.

Further reading:

Analyst: Cisco will need to make acquisitions if its to meet its goal of 12% to 17% growth

Further evidence that Cisco's business is hurting is hitting the blogosphere today as investment firm UBS Warburg downgraded Cisco stock, citing slowing orders and softness in U.S. and European enterprise markets. The firm cut its revenue estimates for Cisco's fiscal fourth quarter, which ends in July, from 6% to 4% on a sequential basis and to 6% "organic" growth – excluding acquisitions – year over year, according to a story by Network World's Jim Duffy.

Cisco Chambers describes business outlook as 'extremely challenging'

"Extremely challenging" was how Cisco CEO John Chambers described the outlook for the next few quarters, as Cisco Wednesday reported its fiscal second-quarter results that matched analysts' expectations. Sales were up 16.5% year over year with Cisco finishing its most recent quarter with earnings -excluding charges - of $2.4 billion, or 38 cents per share, on $9.8 billion in revenue. Chambers said: ""We are seeing our U.S. and European customers becoming increasingly cautious.

Analysts cautious for Cisco's earnings report on Wednesday

The outlook for Cisco's earnings report on Wednesday doesn't look terribly bright according to the comments from various financial analysts dugg up by Eric Savitz, a blogger for SeekingAlpha. You'll remember that in November, despite posting an awesome first-quarter profit that were in line with analysts' estimates, Cisco's sales to its largest 25 customers declined. Eight of them were financial services companies feeling the heat from the mortgage crises.
