Network World Fusion 09/03/02

Compendium's now being published with Moveable Type.

OK, OK, so this makes it the fourth tool I've used in roughly a year to put out this blog. But this one, I think, is a keeper. It seems really stable (long-time sufferers, um, readers, may recall how I seemed happy with Radio until its database went kablooie one day). It let's us publish multiple Weblogs through a single administrative console and it supports a simple workflow. Weblogs are multiplying like rabbits around here (we've already got three, with more on the way), so suddenly scalability is important (Greymatter, which I used until this morning, is great because it's so easy to set up and use, as long as you only have one Weblog and you don't work at a place that has actual editors who might want to proofread items first). And it's server based - important when you have reporters posting from trade shows, where they might not have access to their own computers (which rules out the client-based Radio).

Plus, you can now comment directly on individual postings. Gone, alas, is the old "karma" system, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I could never tell if a negative vote on an item meant you thought the thing the item was about was dumb or if I was dumb for even posting about it. Now you can remove all uncertainty by speaking out.

I switched from Blogger to Moveable Type earlier this year, in part because you said nice things about it. (In private email, which you may not remember.) It's treated me well so far. Much of my learning curve has been because my weblog is simpler than the default. I've got all the headroom I'll ever need.
