Network World Fusion 09/17/02

You remember Iridium, right? Sure, what with all those ambitious plans to create a globe-girdling network of satellite phone systems that didn't quite work out because the phones were way too expensive and clunky (even if the company is now out of bankruptcy).

But it turns out that Iridium satellites create interesting light effects, easily viewable from the ground, called Iridium flares. Quite cool. And quite predictable. Heavens-Above even lets you find out when you might see the flares in your area (free registration required, but you can log on anonymously).

Introduction----------------------
This CD was created to help you organize and keep track of all that satellite
television has to offer. No matter where you live in the world, with just a
simple mouse click you can quickly and easily find the satellites that are in
your area. A click on any satellite will show the channels available on that
satellite. Various filtering options allow you to configure the program to your
specifications. There's also an online update function so that you can download
the latest changes. You can also display just the updates for a particular group
of satellites. There are even Satellite receiver software updates included for a
select list of receivers.
-------------------------------------2. System

the CD-ROM)
A more detailed explanation of the SatcoDX World of Satellites II Full
Version is given below.
--------------------------------------------------------------5.
World of Satellites II Full Version -
v3.00--------------------------------------------------------------
The full version of "World of Satellites II" provides a wealth of satellite
information including frequencies, coverage zones and technical parameters of
ALL satellites around the world. This information is presented in table format
and can be filtered, sorted and printed. A "Search" function enables you to
quickly find a particular satellite or satellite program. You can enter a
location anywhere in the world and display a list of all satellites that are
theoretically visible (satellites visible from your location) and practically
visible (satellites that are receivable based on your dish size). A powerful
"Filter" function lets you choose to display only those programs that match your
selection criteria. These filtered programs can then be uploaded into SatcoDX
compatible satellite receivers. With a connection to the Internet, daily
satellite updates can be downloaded.
5.1. Installation*****************
To start the full version, follow the simple steps below:

From the "Start-up Menu" screen (see Fig. 1), click on
"SatcoDX World of Satellites II Full Version". An install wizard will be
launched that will install the program onto your PC's hard drive.

A "Welcome" screen (Fig. 2) will appear. We
recommend that you close all open programs and then click "Next" to

Personal Profile 1 (empty - left for user to customize it)
Personal Profile 2 (empty - left for user to customize it)
Personal Profile 3 (empty - left for user to customize it)
[All Satellite Channels]
All the available profiles are located in the drop down box on the right side
of the toolbar, and when you click on one of them, all the channels that fit
that profile are displayed in the "Profile Mode" window.
You can modify the existing profiles (except the [All Satellite Channels]
profile which is read-only and displays all the channels from all the
satellites) and make new ones in the "Profile Editor" (Fig. 23). You can open
the "Profile Editor" by clicking the icon on
the right side of the toolbar.

Fig. 23  Profile
Editor
You can create as many profiles as you wish. If you wish that "Profile
Editor" calculates what satellites are receivable from your position and with
your dish, you can enter your position (either by clicking on the world map, or
using the sliders in the upper right corner of the window) and dish size with
the slider. All the receivable satellites will be shown after you click the
"Display Satellites" button (Fig. 24).

Fig. 24  The sliders and the "Display
Satellites" button
When the satellites are displayed, you can deselect some of them that you
don't wish to be displayed by unchecking the box next to their name.
If you wish to select only several satellites, you can do it directly by
clicking one of the red bars with the label "SatcoDX Control Center 1-9" to view
all the satellites in a Control Center, and then by checking the box next to the
name of the desired satellite.
When you have selected all the desired satellites, you can choose the
filtering criteria on the "User System Settings" (Fig. 25) and

When you determine all the criteria, you can save the newly created or
modified profile by clicking the "Save Profile" button and entering the name of
the profile. You can delete the profiles you don't need using the "Delete
Profile" button.
And in the end, in order to see the list of the channels according to the
profile, click the "Display Channels According to Selected Profile" button.
If you don't wish the channels to be displayed, click the "Cancel" button to
return to the "Profile Mode".
From the "Profile Mode" you can save and print the data in the way described
in the section 5.10.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------6.
SatcoDX World of Satellites II CD Version -
v3.00----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The "CD Version" version of "World of Satellites II" can be run directly from
the CD and does not need to be installed on your PC. Some of the "Full Version"
features are not available in the "CD Version". For example, you won't be able
to save any profiles you create.
6.1. Start Up***************
With the PC already turned on, insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive. The
Autorun feature of the CD will automatically display the "Start-Up Menu" screen
(see Fig. 1).
If the application does not start automatically, you can manually launch the
program by clicking on "Start", "Run", then type in "D:/autorun" and click "OK".

Note:
The drive letter for your CD-ROM drive may be
different than "D". Make sure you use the correct drive letter for your
CD-ROM drive.
From the "Start-Up Menu" screen, click on "SatcoDX World of Satellites II CD
Version". Updating the database is possible (read about that in section 5.3), but the new
data will be lost when you exit the program, because you haven't installed it on
your hard drive. Because of that, it is recommended that you update the database
every time you run the software. You also won't be able to save any profile you
create using the "Profile Editor".
Refer to the "SatcoDX World of Satellites II Full Version" section 5 for instructions on
how to use the features in the "CD Version", because they are the same for both
versions.
