Network World Fusion 10/03/02

Yes, yes, sure was fun when you could see Microsoft in the top slot when you searched Google on "go to hell."

While Google itself isn't talking, keen observers of the search engine scene, i.e., the sort of people who routinely search on their own first name to see what position they come up in, note the search engine has been tinkering with its sort algorithms over the past week or so.

As noted here, Google now checks the text of a link against the text of the page the link goes to. If the words don't match up (i.e., if "hell" doesn't appear anywhere on www.microsoft.com/index.html), then you're not going to see the link reflected in Google results.

This not only saves Bill Gates from eternal damnation but probably puts a damper on the oh-so-fun game of Googlebombing, in which you try to drive up the ranking of a site on Google by having people create lots of links to the site.
