Tory Jessup reports playing with an interesting new security tool called amap:

Similar in function and syntax as NMap the popular port scanner, AMap is a scanner that uses various signatures to identify the protocols of open ports.

For example. a Hacker installs a Backdoor on port 31337 and an FTP Server on port 9876. AMap will make connections to those ports and identify the service that is running on the port.

You can read more about AMap and download it here

AMap is still very much in the development stages, but is a great resource to start identifying what all of those ports are that seem to be open on a compromised machine.
