The pMachine folks figured out what was wrong with the registration script and sent us a new one. Now that's service! So we've got pMachine up and fully running.
Gave up on Metadot. It's no doubt cool, but it required more messing around with the server than I was comfortable with - or wanted to ask our network guy to do. Instead, I got TWiki up and running (and Rocco, the aforementioned network guy, only had to add two missing Perl modules).
TWiki is a Perl-based wiki and has some way cool possibilities: Forums, file attachments, a calendar, etc., and creating and modifying pages is way easy - anybody can do it without knowing a lick of HTML or dealing with a control panel.
It also has that oh-so-scary anbody-can-change-any-page feature, but a: we're all professionals here, b: version control means we can roll back anything ridiculous and c: the software lets us lock down particular parts of the site if need be. But, hmm, how does one delete a page from the system?
As with pMachine, I built a simple H.R. site to play with. In fact, it's sort of a toss up now between pMachine and TWiki. Rocco and I meet next week with H.R. and Marketing - the two departments most in need of a functioning intranet - to show them the two systems and see if they have any preferences.
