Edward Mitchell discusses a new service that uses GPS to find hikers and mountain climbers in distress. Last month, the government got all excited at the first use of one of these Personal Locator Beacons to help rescue a hiker in the Adirondacks. Unrecorded is how the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration felt when the very same guy used his PLB two weeks later - and was promptly arrested for abusing the service:
"They rescued him in severe weather Dec. 2, but determined later that Skalak should have been able to make it out on his own and had exaggerated his predicament."
