It's a long essay (I'm about halfway through it myself), but Smarter, Simpler Social provides a good overview of efforts toward a sort of unified theory of applications - in which applications adapt to the people who use them, rather than the other way around:
" You won't see SAP release a 'Social Software Module' or Peoplesoft announce an 'EnterpriseSocial Software Management' product. If that was the case, we would all be talking about it, but there is too much legacy. Perhaps this is the opportunity, for major categories of enterprise software to be fundamentally revisited by new companies, but that depends upon the value proposition."
