Scott Johnson, CEO of Feedster, has a blog, but he's using blogging software that doesn't have a way to automatically block comment spam. To try to block them, he installed a "captcha" module - when you try to post a comment, on his blog, you have to type in a set of numbers that are randomly generated for each posting (the idea being that spammers have automated their spamming). Worked for a bit, but then he noticed more spam. So he checked his server logs:
"GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY!!!! HOLY COMMENTS BATMAN!!!
"They're actually typing in the damn numbers!!! I repeat -- They're actually typing in the damn numbers!!!. Now maybe they beat the Captcha automatically via some kind of screen reader but my guess is that they're actually typing in the damn numbers. "
Maybe it's the latest thing to get offshored?
Via Jeremy Zawodny, who challenges the reader to come up with a few ways a search engine (he works for Yahoo) could help curb the problem.
