Engaget reports on VoIP spam, or vam - from, of all places, VoIP provider Vonage:

"... The thing is, Vonage never called us. Because they use Voice over IP they were able to insert the message directly into our inbox, where it was waiting for us next time we checked our voicemail. It’s just as easy for them to put a voicemail in everyone’s inbox as it is to put into one person’s, which is exactly why we have to deal with so much email spam. ..."

But thats true for every voicemail system. Some administrator somewhere always has the means to create a broadcast message. No big deal. The bigger threat in VOIP is the lack of security. Its even less secure than the PSTN, itself a wide open & non secure technology. Loose lips sink ships is still true: never say anything over the phone you dont want your Mom or SO to hear. Teleco and carrier employees listen in for fun. Everyone who can, does it.
