In an age of mobile phones and now VoIP, area codes are fast losing any geographical relevance, Mike suggest.s And while there is still some cachet (he notes people keep trying for a 212 area code), perhaps it's time to pay more attention to efforts in Japan and Britain to create new "area" codes for service-specific numbers (for example, Britain is about to launch a code for VoIP numbers).
