A radio transmission technology that attempts to avoid interference and block snooping by varying the frequency used by the transmission. It was co-invented by actress Hedy Lamarr.
Spread spectrum in general was originally used by the military. For today's wireless communications in an unlicensed radio frequency band, FCC regulations require the use of a spread spectrum technology. The choice is direct sequence spread spectrum (used by 802.11b systems) or frequency hopping spread spectrum (used by HomeRF and Bluetooth).
