UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System)
A 3G wireless technology designed to increase wireless-data speeds on GSM networks.
Also known as Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA), the IP-based UMTS currently offers speeds of up to 320K bit/sec, compared to 30K to 40K bit/sec bandwidth on GSM networks. Vendors say they will eventually be able to offer speeds of up to 2M bit/sec. UMTS is designed to eventually allow global roaming through fixed and satellite wireless systems.
In July, 2004, AT&T Wireless became the first U.S. carrier to offer UMTS service.
It competes with a technology known as EV-DO.
