ROADM (reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer)
Devices that let service providers more efficiently provision DWDM services across a metropolitian-Ethernet network.
ROADMs are used to remotely reconfigure, add and drop capacity at each node, which allows for network upgrades without affecting in-service traffic. This helps minimize operational expenditures by reducing the number of truck rolls required to upgrade and maintain metropolitan and regional transport networks, according to Alcatel, which sells ROADM-based products.
Also, ROADM lets service providers design networks once yet provision circuits and services as often as needed, regardless of traffic forecasts.
